PostPosted: Thu Jan 05, 2006 1:08 am    Post subject: Spell updates

The following updates have gone into effect for spells:

1) ECAST

Ecast is a new command which allows you to modify the way you utter spells
with an emote. Note that currently this applies only to 'cast' spells.
for example, "ecast 'as he throws diamond dust into the air' sanctuary" will yield
a cast of sanctuary, with a line along the lines of:
"mage utters, 'sanctuary' as he throws diamond dust into the air."

2) Color option

Inserted into the color tables is a new "color spells" option which
highlights friendly and hostile spells going into effect on you, for
example a blindness notification is grey, and white when it is cured. This
is completely optional and the default is OFF.

3) Spell abbreviations

Various spells now have some simple abbreviations to save typing out the
entire "cast spellname" part of the argument. For example, "armo" is
short for "armor". As the list is updated, the abbreviations shall be
added into the helpfiles. Communers share this new functionality.
NOTE: This option may be withdrawn if it causes problems.

4) Spell yells

Some spells will now cause other players to scream a yell which identifies
the spell which was cast. This will apply to damage spells only.

You can expect the relevant helpfiles and further fleshing out of the
abbreviations and yells to be completed during the following weekend.

Ok I busted my ass to bring you this. Basically for for the entire day ..well just the past 14 hours I guess.. I was adding abbreviations for every single spell and updating the helpfiles. Also I added the spell types into the helpfiles so that you can see what kind of saves you need.

Here's an example helpfile:
Code:
'PROTECTIVE SHIELD'
Syntax: cast 'protective shield'  (short syntax: prsh)
Spell type: PROTECTIVE

A protective shield is a thin shell of magical energy, used to deflect
attacks from projectiles.  Bodies of a much greater size or mass will
bounce harmlessly off a protective shield, as long as the attack is
projectile in nature.  Smaller attacks may penetrate weaker areas of
the shell.  Noteable attacks that are prevented by protective shields
are full-body skills like bash and bodyslam, that would otherwise cripple
the target.  Arrows, skills that involve arrows, and javelins are also
blocked by protective shields to a lesser extent.  Note that this does
not extend to other forms of blunt attacks such as attacks by a mace.
Clerics and mages are given the opportunity to learn to use protective
shields.

Not only that but I rewrote ALL the duff helpfiles for spells (like this one here). So that there isn't a helpfile for a spell that I know of, that is false or misleading. Furthermore I smartened up the spell interpreter so it can give you some better failure messages, because I remember seeing people get confused trying to use create water and all that.

Saw a few people using ecast already, looks very nice!

We've seen several people try to change their casted spell appearances with extra emotes, but the effort goes underappreciated because its spam. Grimp was definitely one of those people. With ecast, your spell emotes dont present themselves as a handicap for fighting.. its just flair.

linenthel used to do it a lot. i'd sometimes try to get it to backfire on her by outlagging her with her own emotes. i got her once that way i think actually, its in one of my logs

"Communing" a spell is supposed to be that character's way of praying/communicating with his/her gods to receive the benefits of a spell:

Code:
Bob closes his eyes momentarily.

"Casting," on the other hand, is using words, gestures and/or spell components to create a spell that has been learned.

Unless you can think of several clever ways to bow your head and pray, I don't think communing will need its own version of 'ecommune'...

Something akin too;

Code:
ecomm 'as he screams to the dark gods for their protection' sanctuary

Code:
ecomm 'with one fist upraised, the paladin is enveloped by a holy light' crusade

Code:
ecomm 'uttering soft prayers to the divine in askance of aid against an unholy foe' blessing

No offence to any religion, or any followers of any religion but those of you who have been to a southern baptist churge/lutheran church (both) can tell me the difference in prayer (this is a generalization).

Shouldn't imagine it would matter. they could both be devi, since the same character can't cast them both.

Demon Visage = shaman.
Detect evil = healer, paladin (possibly some others).

Opposite alignment spells, there'd be no worry about two spells mapped to one nickname on any one character.

Unless it's a bug, none of the abbreviations worked on Aldacer, dinv or anything... I get 'You don't know a spell by that name.' and such.

That's probably trying to CAST the spells, not commune them.

Maybe send a note in-game, incase Dav doesn't catch this post.

Syntax: cast 'detect invis' (short syntax: dinv)
Syntax: commune 'demonic visage' <target> (short syntax: dvis)

Umm, if I didnt give it to communers, its because I wanted this to be extra ability for just the pure mage classes, but my guess is you're typing it wrong. The helpfiles show the actual abbreviations.

Dont forget you can make your own aliases and use ecast to make things look really sweet.

Heh. I use to trigger this on every kill:
"emote burns into the ground an image of a Golden Dragon embedded with an arcane cross."

I remember there were a few times that that was enough to spam me long enough to miss first dibs on loots. I also once got called on it and was asked how do you burn something into the ground thats golden in color...I had no response to that but continued to do it anyways Shocked

Anyone guess the character?
