Hey guys,

I noticed while I was auditing druid spells for correct spell types (afflictive, maledictive, curative etc) that we actually have a fair # of spells in a category which is just called "other" . Not mentioned in the helpfiles. Its clearly a bit of a misnomer as this is really a "general" category and to have it labelled as "other" says its sort of an extra, or even unclassified, set of spells. Which detect invis, word of recall, infravision (and other important spells) are most definitely not extra spells, they belong somewhere and I'd even say center stage because theyre critical to the game. So this name "other" is rather unsuited for its purpose here and it doesnt feel right.

I thought about adding other spell types but it will end up us still needing this "other" category so I dont like that.

Therefore I was thinking we could, although it is obviously not a big priority, but we really could just add a name for this "other" category, something cooler than "general". Its an opportunity to add a bit of our own flair onto what AR already has right now, which is good. I figured I would throw it out to the forums for suggestions. Or just tell me this is a waste of time.

Here's an example of a shaman spell list so you can see what I mean

Code:

Those particular types of spells go by "alteration" in DnD.

Thanks grant, I believe it needs to be generic as word of recall doesnt really strike me as being an "alteration" spell. "other" works better. Just looks like the spell system is a little sloppy with that word in my opinion. Its still a general category / general name though that we're looking for

My initial thought was something along the lines of Utility as well or something like Support, at least for what I see in the shaman list, but support sounds more like the Curative type, while I'm thinking of like a personal support.

Alterative is growing on me actually after talking with nycticora in spoon about it. Its really funny seeing unholy strength is a protective spell and that gives us something better to do with it

Well, should demonic visage be a mental spell? Cause I'm seeing as the shaman does some evil chant thing, rips his literal face off and there is a horrifying image you see that scares the crap out of you so much you drop your weapon. So, what if the shaman blinded you before he does the good ol' scorpion fire skull thing on ya, if you don't 'see' it, should you still be affected by it?

That is actually how the spell is...demonic visage does not work when your opponent is blinded. At least, last time I played a shaman.

I think that was added because Burzuk didn't like it when people blinded the guy with the manticore whip and disarmed him to get his weapon. I still don't understand why, I thought it was fun

This is getting off track a bit although we have a couple good suggestions.

Re: Demonic visage, its obvious preferred to keep classed as MENTAL because helps to give shamans something else than a literally complete set of maledictive. I've always thought of it as conjuring up nightmare-ish images in the victim's mind. How you classify that in DND, I dunno, but as far as AR goes its pretty clearly a mental save.

I was surprised that unholy strength was a PROTECTIVE spell.. probably frenzy is too then. Stuff like that is weird

The Demonic Visage spell relies on fear. In d&d, fear affects are will/wisdom based. That's our mental. Mals are fortitude/constitution based, and afflictive are reflex/dexterity based. The whole save for half damage thing comes from d&d where you 'almost' get away from the fireball or w/e. In some versions of d&d, rogues take no damage at all on a successful reflex save.

Most of those "Other" spells listed are divination (seeing things which are not otherwise apparent) aside from word of recall (more of a "personal alteration" spell), and ethereal passage (same). Group recall is more of a "mass alteration" spell. But the more things get divided, the more complicated it gets.

As for unholy strength, it is protective in the sense that it is a self-buff.

Universal seems like a decent choice if you want to not use "Other" as a convenient label or divide it further.

Also, most lesser divination spells (I think levels 1-5?) were like the "All" sphere for priests: any wizard could learn them without specialization because they were essential to his/her functioning as a caster (read magic and detect magic for example). I don't think "All" is appropriate, but calling it "Miscellaneous" seems wrong and that's the last suggestion I have.

Edit #2: honestly, I am not sure we need to change it.

No spell needs changing. It's more of a way to differentiate between all the spells of which type they are.
