Notice the stats here are total-character stats, rather than month-by-month summaries. Thus, only completed (i.e. dead) characters are listed here. Currently active characters will have their shot at getting on next year's list.

This refers only to opted-in (read: post-PK record change) characters that are currently found in the Graveyard posts. So yes.

I don't think Loanir got recorded at all... I didn't find him in the Graveyard posts, so either he wasn't opted in or his thread got deleted somehow.

And keep in mind, there was a formula used here:

For each cabal, "TOTAL PKS" were tallied and the members were ranked. Then "OVERALL EFFICIENCY" (PKs / (PKs + Deaths)) was tallied, and again the members were ranked. These TWO LISTS were then taken into consideration, and each member's RANK from each list was thrown into a calculation ((PK_RANK * 0.35) + (EFF_RANK * 0.65)) to come up with an overall rank. That's what got listed as their "overall ranks," not just how many PKs they had. Look at the Knights: Gunther's ranked above Kelek, even though Kelek had one more PK, because Gunther's efficiency was better.

Think of it sort of like NCAA college football's BCS standings - it makes sense that way... even though I hate the BCS rankings.

I love the fact that I made number seven on here with Dolgin, really never thought I'd ever make a top anything list when I start out.

*cough* I understand I was let into the graveyard roles by a blessing from you guys, but could I possibly be added to the roles of knights? Dolgin was a knight before my unfortunate 1/4 life crisis. Well atleast honorable mention, I don't wanna knock anyone off over something bitchy like that.

Records based on Graveyard posts, thus the status of characters (caballed or otherwise) at time of death/deletion.

The Overall Top 10 list again:

Code:
                                        EFF.  KILL
NAME       KILLS DEATHS EFFICIENCY  RANK  RANK    CABAL      CLASS
 1. Runath       56     7     88.89%      1     2    [KNIGHT]    Paladin
 2. Rolf         89    18     83.18%      2     1    [LEGION]    Shaman
 3. Navatar      51    15     77.27%      3     5    [KNIGHT]    Paladin
 4. Thkot        53    35     60.23%      6     4    [LEGION]    Invoker
 5. Thremus      31    16     65.96%      4     9    [JUSTICE]   Warrior
 6. Orkahn       54    48     52.94%     12     3    [LEGION]    Dark-Knight
 7. Dolgin       31    24     56.36%      9    10    (None)      Healer
 8. Istorvir     19    12     61.29%      5    20    [LEGION]    Ninja
 9. Nychlas      47    47     50.00%     13     6    [WARLORD]   Ranger
10. Dharza       21    15     58.33%      7    18    [LEGION]    Necromancer

Now that everyone's had a chance to digest the raw numbers, here are my observations.

Methodology. I chose 65% efficiency and 35% kills (roughly at 2:1) ratio because it's much more difficult to accrue a high efficiency ratio than it is to amass a high body count. Let's face it, most of the deletes were due non-IC reasons (including boredom), and none of the top 10 wound up condying. Also, there is a much larger gap between the top efficiency scores than most people realize. For instance, if all of the top efficiency scorers had lived out their full 61 lives, we'd have:
Code:

   NAME    KILLS DEATHS EFFICIENCY   TKA
1. Runath    56     7      88.89     488
2. Rolf      89    18      83.18     301
3. Navatar   51    15      77.27     207
4. Thremus   31    16      65.96     118
5. Istorvir  19    12      61.29      97

   40% EFF.  --    --      40.00      41
   50% EFF.  --    --      50.00      61
   60% EFF.  --    --      60.00      92
   70% EFF.  --    --      70.00     142
   80% EFF.  --    --      80.00     244
   85% EFF.  --    --      85.00     346
   90% EFF.  --    --      90.00     549
   93% EFF.  --    --      93.00     810
   96% EFF.  --    --      96.00    1464
   98% EFF.  --    --      98.00    2989
   99% EFF.  --    --      99.00    6039

TKA = TOTAL KILL AVERAGE PER 61 DEATHS
(COMPARE ERA = EARNED RUN AVERAGE PER 9 INNINGS)

As you can see, you'd have to kill many more targets to improve your efficiency the higher it already is. In fact, while there was only a 6% gap between Runath and Rolf's efficiency, there's a whopping 62% difference between their TKA (i.e. for every 3 kills Rolf makes, Runath can be expected to make 5), and Runath has five times the TKA of Istorvir. These huge gaps were among the reasons why efficiency was weighted almost twice as much as total kills, and to my eye the final Overall Top 10 list looks to have been arranged both logically and intuitively.

I should also add that the Overall Top 10 wound up including 8 of 10 from each of the two Top 10 lists (i.e. 8 of the Top 10 kills and 8 of the Top 10 efficiency), so despite efficiency being weighted more heavily, people who did amass lots of kills were being fairly represented as well.

Class distribution. Out of the 16 classes we have (excluding vampires), 9 different classes were represented in the Overall Top 10. You may not recognize the significance of this until you realize that in a perfectly balanced 16-class mud, a Top 10 list (i.e. randomly chosen since all classes are as equally good as any other) consists of 7.61 different classes. [For math geeks: the formula is C * (1 - (1 - 1/C)^10) where C is the number of classes in the mud.] Yes, we are actually even more "balanced" than is theoretically possible, the difference being explained by variation introduced by the small sample sizes used. But keep this in mind when we discuss how one class is "way overpowered" and another class is "completely gimped": the class diversity of the 2005 Top 10 lists shows that classes on AR are actually very well-balanced already. All we're doing here is even more fine-turning, adding new features, and splitting hairs while arguing on the forum. That's pretty much it. The gameplay balance is already in great shape.

Cabal distribution. When Legions were getting spanked earlier this summer and I told people to relax because it'd blow over, I meant it. And I was right: Legions easily dominated the Overall Top 10 list by the year's end, capturing an impressive half of all available slots. It's the nature of the way evils operate on AR, because when they are ascendent, evils are very powerful. Let this be a lesson to those of you who didn't take evils as the threats that they were, and kudos to those of you we have been playing evil characters.

What may surprise you is the weakest cabal: Justice. Yes, despite all the whining about guards and ensnare. What you don't see is the fact that as we were trying to assemble a top 10 list for each cabal, Justice was the only cabal who couldn't even muster enough members to fill 10 slots, so we had to resort to making top 5 lists for cabals instead. And the recent addition of wild items and weapons haven't helped them one bit at all. Justices are consistently outnumbered and outgunned, they are the hardest cabal to play due to having to do cabal defense and enforce the laws, and since unlike the other cabals they actually have a job to do (and it's so easy to get booted from Justice for making a mistake). Add all this up, and you'll see that Justices desperately need all the breaks (and new members) that they can catch. If you see some changes favoring Justice in the future, you'll know why: because they actually need it. And you shouldn't be surprised if I'm not particularly sympathetic to complaints about how "strong" you think Justice allegedly is, because the numbers don't support that at all.

Plans for next year. As you can see, 2005's Top 10 list was compiled by a simple weighing of two factors. If you've been paying attention to the new graveyard posts for 2006, however, you can see that not only have we worked to improve the numbers by adding anti-padding checks, but we've already begun tracking level 50 stats to boot. You can expect these new statistics to be factored heavily into 2006's Overall Top 10 list, as well as other factors yet to be announced. We want to encourage not simply mass killing, but quality kills against quality opponents, and our stat tracking system will continue to be enhanced to reflect this. The 2005 Top 10 lists are only a starting point -- the lists for 2006 will be even more thorough, interesting, and authoritative. You can count on it.

Remember this is actually a 'top 10 pkers or 2005 - WHO WERE OPTED IN' the stats are only really from the time when kill stats were recorded and there were a couple of notable people who are not included because of that.
