Tonight I have fixed a couple oustanding bugs with pets:

Used to be that pet stats were set when you bought the pet and stayed like that forever. So your kestrel would have 18 dex at level 1 and your kitten would have 11 dex at level 30, This was a goof. i've normalized stats so that they scale. Existing pets will have their stats updated when you log in. Note that besides stats, there are variances in hp, damage, etc, that are pre-determined. these types of things already scale up. You should be able to buy any pet now and have them more comparable at 30. So pick one to suit your rp and be happy.

I have also modified the pet experience function. You should find that pets level more quickly now especially when levelling up a new pet.

What about number of attacks? It's kind of gay that undead slave has 3 attacks and even at level 30 some other pets only have 1 attack.

I've seen the undead slave get four attacks on more than one occasion. I've found that the reason for this is some pets are auto-hasted. The undead slave is already under the haste effect. If you detect magic, it doesn't pick it up, but if you try to cast haste on it, you get a message saying it's already been hasted. But I agree with Kalist.

I just bought a raven from Solace and was quite dismayed to find out that it does negative damage at level three.

Code:

Your pet, the raven, is alive and kicking.
Level 3, 3196 experience, 1404 needed to level (22% complete)
42 of 42 hit points remaining, resurrection cost is 9 gold coins.
Armor class is -9 vs pierce, -9 vs bash, -9 vs slash, 0 vs magic.
Save vs Spell is -3.
Damage is -2 to 0.
Carrying 0/1 items of a combined weight of 0/15 pounds.


That doesn't seem right.

Please provide a list of the hasted pets. That's definitely not right. Also I levelled the same raven to 3 and the damage is 3-5

I boosted the base damage of pet (i.e. what they get at 1) It will be the same as before at 30, and still underneath mercs for the level. After testing I felt honestly I'd rather just rank a pet up - which is considerably easier now - and take the longer time to rank, because the item carrying is pretty handy. But mercs are probably still your ticket if you are a mage or something.

BTW stone mercs outhit pets, if you are just looking to max damage, with the temporary exception of the undead slave

Mercs can also wield weapons again now, so if you get a nice enchanted vuln weapon, they can do decent damage.

I haven't been able to order my mercenary to attack on its own, to start combat. I don't know if this was intentional or not. I just thought to bring it up.

With the recent and soon forthcoming changes, I think you'll see mercenaries simply as instruments of damage and pets will tank, rescue, carry items, and stay with you.

Bug with level 15 mercs still having level 30 stats has been fixed

Pet can no longer carry rare items

i was thinking about this and i was wondering if this is a good idea or not.

what if pets that you buy have one attack and at level 10 they get another attack and at lvl 30 they get 3 attacks per round? I don't know how that would work for some pets but I just thought it would be a way to really see your pet is getting stronger besides the damage output from them.

I have to vent my frustration with the changes to mercenaries. I have spent one hour trying to rank a human invoker and its a death defying feat against the goblins south of town. Unless their is something that I am missing with the new pets maybe some are stronger than others at level 5 but this is crazy. I know that the merc changes were due to people ranking so easily, but this really screws over mages. Warriors and other fighter classes don't feel the effects because they actually do damage, where I sit with 10 rounds of misses and then get grazed to hell its just frustrating. Any advice welcome

Stack ac, stack hitroll, be patient, and rest when necessary. But a pet early. They'll help soon enough.
