I say we just get rid of recall completely and make everyone use teleport! Mwha ha ha ha!
But seriously, there's no reason to get so upset Krok. The change was made today and I'm sure if there are problems they will be fixed ASAP.
I like the changes to gate and such, but I'm not sure I like the way recall works -- it seemed fine the way it was. Just have to try it and see before I make too many judgements.

Hah... this change roxxorz. I get the change while playing last night while I was doing some exploring. Drop into a no-exit and bust out my old trusty 3K potion of recall. And it doesn't work.... And I'm level 35.

I love the smell of flames in the morning! (It's not exactly morning right now, but I digress...)

I gave the wrong instructions to Davairus and he put in a version of the new recall code with a small but crucial uncorrected bug in it. (Obviously this is my fault, not Dav's.) Things should be working correctly now. What "correctly" means is:

a) Players can purchase recall potions of any level in Seringale, and this should soon be extended to all recalls sold across the other cities. This means that curse is much weaker at lower levels, so low level PKers will have to practice doing more running to ensure that they get the kill against a target well-stocked with the most expensive recall potions. It also means that newbies can buy extremely cheap recall potions to help them out of no-exit rooms. There's no reason not to stock up on recall potions anymore.

b) Players need a recall potion at least their level or higher, with some minor fudge factors. If you want to be safe, buy the next tier up recall potion. If you're rich, buy the most expensive recall potions and never worry about this.

c) Recall potions need to be much stronger than the level of the curse spell in order to word through curse. Since recall potions only go up to level 50, it means that curse works like you're accustomed to at the highest levels (i.e. it takes an Imm-level recall to word through a curse starting in the 40's). These changes primarily help out the lower level chars with recalls.

d) Existing pre-change recall potions from Seringale have their levels raised to level 50, so they should still work for everyone who stocked up on the older potions. For recall potions from other sources, you'll have to take your chances as to their spell level. I'd recommend stocking up on perfects at Seringale if you're not sure what level your current recall potions are.

As for the other transpotation spells:

Louis, Flumm, others are correct in that the casting delay with the transportation spells are intended to help people with chasing, as are the area echos. I do want to promote a more offensive style of play here on AR. Notice that there is still no delay on word and teleport--keep that in mind. The other spells vary in their delay length. For example, gate has a longer delay than heaven's gate because gate has offensive uses, whereas heaven's gate doesn't--hence, shorter delay for heaven's gate makes it stronger when used defensively. Overall, the casting delay gives non-transportation spell classes a fairer chance to take down those with the transport spells. Remember again, different transport spells have different delays.

As many others have noted, area echos means that everyone in the area gets notified when someone nearby has activated a transportation spell. Of course it doesn't identify who did it... savvy players with friends can use this to help throw pursuers off their trail. ("Go quaff a recall potion while I hide" etc.)

Personally, i don't like this change.. I am not even close to a good pk'er but i'm allright at running.. playing a pacifist has been rooted by this change and now my chances of escaping anyone has been severly lowered. anyone half decent at tracking chooses an avian it's all over...

well that's my 2c.. really I don't mind i'll just have to learn to run more but I don't think this severe change was needed.

Just be grateful the imps didnt listen to my suggestion about leaving gates open to people to follow through.

With the way that gate appears now ("You draw a gate with a solid mithril staff," or however it looks), I was wondering.

Since the weapon you're wielding is used in the act of creating the gate, does weapon proficiency with that weapon type have anything to do with the success of gate now?

I found out that, yes you can still use word of recall fast; But heaven's gate is slower. This makes it more realistic- although I know I'm going to regret saying that... I havn't yet tried to move after casting, or getting attacked while the spell is being cast. Anyway, this is what you'll see:

'Distant crackling is heard as faith and energy is channeled.

A nimbus of white light appears upon the ground.

The nimbus of light encases you.

As the nimbus of light vanishes you feel power swirl around your body.'

Bascially it takes about the length of a round (This is the best way for me to describe it because I play D&D) or a few seconds. I kinda like this- but I'm not going to like it for fast escapes. As I've said earlier I liked word of recalling to the same room I'm in- and then gateing to my beacon (Which I've set to a popular ranking place that takes more than a few minutes to get to)

They only have to be half-decent at tracking to catch you? I'd have to disagree.. they only need to be as good at tracking as you are at running. Which means its now actually based on skill. Isnt that how it should be?

So anyway I fixed the phase shift problem now. The 1/2 hp thing was temporarily added shortly after the guy posted the remarks, I don't know what came over me but I suggest don't be the first to say anything retarded after I've been exerting effort on your class and I still got code editor open. O_O. I also fixed the herald transcribe bug.

Also I've added a round of lag to arriving from gates so that theres no immediate attacks.

always thought area echos would be cool for anything, especially when emotes/pmotes must always begin with your name to minimize abuse.

so has anyone experimented with gate or heaven's gate? can you disturb your gate with another spell or by drinking milk to hurt yourself, or etc? or do you get lagged the whole time through until you successfully gate or get attacked?
