Soloing

Rather than just flat out increase soloing exp, I have added additional experience and a small cure for eating the hearts of slain creatures. This covers a little more than what I wanted to do - you get more exp while soloing and a bit of relief for the downtime. Note that it only applies to ungrouped situations, so that we don't end up providing extra experience to grouped players with levelling feed triggers.

General levelling

Temporary experience bonuses may now be earned by killing the "boss" of a pack of monsters. For example, Igor the Malevolent in the Mansion is the head of the mutant trolls. The queen of the crystal oozes is considered the head of the oozes. (We're still in the process of choosing these, so notify us and try again later if you don't get any bonus.) The process is pretty simple - you kill the leader, then you kill the underlings until your exp boost wears off. Then if you want, you can go back and redo the leader. I expect you will generally find these leaders to be pretty difficult for the rank you attempt it at, so I would say make sure your group is good enough before you try this, and have an escape plan ready.

For the second change, I was feeling very concerned about the penchant for AFK monster pot scripting and the kind of gameplay that breeds.. you can basically overcome all the challenge in the game just by having enough gold for the potions. Now we have came up with something that gives you an advantage over pure scripting. Working with your fellow players to overcome these difficult mobs require full attention and monster potions are usually nullfied by the rares they hold, so you will have to bring in your classes abilities. I think that you will enjoy the levelling a little more now that it is punctuated with these boss fights, and feel more inclined to keep playing with good groupmates that give you the ability to down these guys. It wont be a simple as 3 warriors + pots = win group, although you can still play that way if you want.

Pets and Mercenaries

It is now possible to own both a pet and a mercenary at the same time.

Mercenaries do not take away experience from a solo ranker and give a boost to a group of two. Mercenaries do not gain experience.

Pets no longer give an experience bonus to a group of two and are treated much the same way as a necromancer's minions or a ranger's pets in regards to xp calculations, but still gain experience to a maximum rank of 30.

Pets are now primarily used to carry equipment and for flavor. Mercenaries will fight in pk and boost ranking, but need purchased again after you quit and reconnect.

Check back soon for another update to mercenaries.

Guild Trainee Mercenaries

Beginning at level 36, players can hire their guild's trainee as their mercenary for leveling support. They behave like the other mercenaries, but will not take part in PK. The outfit command now functions at the guildmaster instead of the trainee.

Some "behind-the-scenes" aspects of groups and experience have been updated to better fit with the new features we've unraveled. In short:

Killing weaker mobs no longer yields the "0 xp" message, but rather diminishing returns like it used to (all the way down to no xp like before).

Having a merc or a pet no longer prevents you from receiving the benefits of eating a heart while ungrouped.

Having a store-bought pet no longer punishes a SOLO ranker. This means you won't see reduced xp if your pet is with you when you kill mobs as long as no other players are in your group. The xp bonus for groups of two etc. remains exclusively with the mercenary.

Code:

'OVERLORD'S FAVOR' 'FAVOR'

The Overlords Favor is granted to brave adventurers who are willing to
risk their lives in order to grow stronger.  Many of the creatures that
inhabit Thera are commanded by a strong individual that acts as their
leader.  By killing the leader of a particular group of creatures, you gain
a temporary reward that increases the experience gained from killing the
minions that are under that leaders command, as well as a discount on
monster potions sold by Jemira in Timaran.

To gain initially gain this favor, you must first kill the leader of the
group of creatures you plan on gaining experience from.  To increase the
rewards affect on your learning, you must either kill the leader again, or
kill every last one of a specific creature that the leader controls.  Note
that the duration of this favor can only be refreshed by killing the leader,
not by killing all of the minions.  To gain the maximum benefit of favor,
and the biggest increase in your experience gains, you must complete this
sequence of either killing the leader or killing all of its minions a total
of four times.  Each time you complete a portion of the sequence, you will
see a message indicating that the bonus has increased, and you will notice
an increase in the amount you learn from killing the minions.  After the
fourth iteration of either killing the leader or killing all of the leader's
minions, you will receive the full Overlord's Favor bonus.  Once the full
bonus has been achieved, you can still refresh the duration of the full
bonus by killing the Overlord again.

The steps one must take to receive the Overlord's Favor are the same for all
of the areas in Thera that are home to a leader and its minions, but an
example from Goblin Village is provided:

1) Kill the goblin chieftain to begin Overlord's Favor.
2) Kill chieftain again OR kill every goblin guard to get "level 2" favor.
3) Kill chieftain again OR kill every goblin guard to get "level 3" favor.
4) Kill chieftain again OR kill every goblin guard to get "level 4" favor.
5) Continue killing chieftain before favor runs out to refresh the duration.

NOTE: If a surge is currently taking place, or you are using a guild reward,
you can gain no benefit from Overlord's Favor.

The overlord favor was updated so that you now just kill the minions of the leader until they challenge your group. Beating the overlord then awards xp and some randomized loot. For instance, if you kill ~15 brownies in Emerald Forest, Sheeka Tranquil will issue your group a challenge. Progress may be tracked with msdp, using the variable "overlord"

Unfortunately this does not work while soloing at the moment, since that's technically not a group. Solo players are on legacy grouping code.
