PostPosted: Mon Mar 17, 2014 7:32 am    Post subject: Religion boons begin

I have streamlined character creation a little, and removed the need to pick "secondary celestial" (seems confusing) for communers. You will just pick your celestial followed by guiding deity instead.

Along with that, I'm pleased to finally be able to properly introduce our "boons". These are significant spells for level 45 communers following a specific religion.

First boons:

Sedgwick - Sedgwicks favor (healer only)

Zylenier - Blanket of Darkness (shaman)

There are 10 different religions and 3 classes to write these for, and I am welcoming ideas from the forum for these. If you want to post suggestions proactively feel free to.

Full list of boons:
Code:

Sarich:     Unforgiving          Light of Sarich
Sedgwick:   Sedgwicks Favor      Shepherd the Weak
Vanisse:    Communion            Perform Miracle
Myria:      Earths Blessing      Strength of the Earth
Aberdour:   Fury of the Storm    Heavenly Sacrifice
Soluminus:  Solar Flare          Phoenix Flash
Stryth:     Supreme Armor        Lightning Strikes Twice
Odoacer:    Roll Out the Barrel  Long Arm of the Law
Denadlyr:   Mists of Arcana      Arcane Focus
Virgil:     Embrace Yin          Seize Yang
Zafrin:     Howling Winds        Beggars Gambit
Diocletian: Courageous Heart     Battlemaster
Davairus:   Bloodbath            Dragon Blood
Rodyn:      Armageddon           Devouring Plague
Resatimm:   Shackles of Ice      Touch of Frost
Sakuragi:   Corrosive Spray      Calamitous Acid
Darkhan:    Betrayers Veil       Phantom Walk
Zylenier:   Shadow Swap          Blanket of Darkness

Can we get some clarification on the strength and purpose of a boon? What is "Blanket of Darkness"?

Doesn't it have a help file? It was a shaman spell not long ago.

Blanket of darkness cloaks a room, so the 'where' command can no longer be used to see in or out of it. (Anywhere in that area). As it is a spell it has a limited duration, but its pretty long. There are creative uses but usually its used as a room to rest up in.

Will you be making these boons for specific classes or will a thief who follows Zylenier be able to gain a boon similar to blanket, or perhaps a different skill altogether like shadow shot that has a chance to curse with a cool down of course.

I would like to see different "class legacies" intertwined with religions to add diversity. It sounds like a lot of work, but think about how much individuality can be gained by having racial, class, and boon legacies thrown into the mix.

So just throw ideas. There's like 30 spells, and i'm willing to try anything. Normally I'd think up spells first and choose the god/class afterward, but since any problems are going to be isolated to specific race/class/god combos (that is very specific) we can easily address OPness, so go nuts.

Maybe following Resatimm allows a shaman to teleport while near death or something. That would be pretty sweet actually. I'll add that.

^ This should give you an idea of what I am looking for by now.

Hmm maybe a skill that reduces the chance of losing concentration for a few ticks. A jihadist's hug o'death skill would be nice, but I don't see how to make that fair.

A skill that is used during combat which would make casters and communers harmed by the use of their spells. The spells are still usable, but a small amount of damage comes in. Also (either with or separate) one that makes an extra bit of lag for casting/communing.

I see this being useful at a point where a caster/communer drops sanc/prsh. Devote instantly and then follow for a few extra rounds of combat.

Sedgwick- Sedgwick's favor (Healer only)
Zylenier- Blanket of Darkness (Shaman only)

Sarich- Unforgiven (Healer only) This was taught due to the betrayal of his half-brother Rodyn.

Vanisse- Communion (Healer only) Vanisse brings communion to her followers. This allows the healer
to commune at a higher level for a short period of time. Quite lucky, indeed.

Myria- Earth's blessing (Healer only) Myria over the domain of Earth, allows this blessing to be bestowed
upon her faithful followers. The blessing allows a stronger will and fortitude.

Aberdour- Heavenly Sacrifice (Healer only) Aberdour, fueled by the Storm, and assisted in power by Olyn have
given their strength to their followers. This sacrifice gives the follower a last ditch effort to purge darkness.
A barrage of light blasts from the pure in an attempt to harm evil. (Much like final reserve where the healer will
still die.)

Soluminus- Searing Light (Healer only) Soluminus over domain of the sun grants his followers retribution and
prudence. This communion allows a healer's divine retribution to be infused with strength from the sun. Not
only will this damage the undead, but the affects of everlasting day may be granted upon a 100% successful
hit from the prayer. (Divine retribution + Everlasting day = Bad day for the undead.)

These are some ideas for the good-aligned healer only religions for boons. I will be working on Paladins/shamans
shortly and post my ideas as soon as I can.

OP-ness can be discussed later, but I wanted to get some ideas out there.

An idea for Soluminus healer boon.

Phoenix Flash - The Healer would cast it and it would last 24 hours, with a 48 hour cool down. So you have to wait a day before you can use it again. What it would do is create a blinding light, like a phoenix exploding and the rays of the sun explode out when the healer dies, attempting to blind everyone in the room. Perhaps like flashfire blind.

Olyn Wrote: Interesting idea. Would something like this need to be cast at all? It could be innate and automatic for communers of that god.

What about one that taints your corpse when you die. Or at least degrades your wares. A kind of, you got me but you get nothing, boon.

Or in the same vain- your corpse explodes when you die. It'll be an attempt to kill your opponent. After the fact, of course. As last laugh.

Light of Sarich - healer casts a room spell that does cure continual for everyone in the room, with constant mana drain. he can break the casting manually. it would also end when he leaves the room, sleeps or runs out of mana. allows all people with healing spells in the room to experience enhanced healing without needing to activate cure cont first

Would he be able to cast other healing spells while he is concentrating for enhanced healing?

How about a spell that you place on someone that lasts 9 hours. that grants them enhanced healing, so you do not even have to worry about cure cont on that person.

Zafrin - Warped Space - Turns the room into a fun house with the same affects as the Void so you are disoriented and exit at a random direction. Usable every 60 hours. 15 hour cool down if failed.

Denadlyr - Arcane Purge - Sacrifices half your health and grants you 80% of your mana, usable every 48 hours.

Rodyn -Disease scarred- Grants 15 save from mals for 24 hours. Usable every 48 hours.

Well folks, we have priest customization. I'm amazed we've came this far but here we are.

Code:

'BOONS'

Available only to the most devout healers, shamans and druids, religious boons
allow these priests to peform wonders on behalf of paragon Immortals.  Boons
may only be called on infrequently, so the priest will have to choose the right
moment and best situation to ask for their gift.

The lists of boons:

sedgwicks favor           lightning strikes twice     bloodbath
shepherd the weak         supreme armor               dragon blood
unforgiving               long arm of the law         armageddon
light of sarich           roll out the barrel         devouring plague
communion                 mists of arcana             shackles of ice
perform miracle           arcane focus                touch of frost
earths blessing           embrace yin                 corrosive spray
strength of the earth     seize yang                  calamitous acid
heavenly sacrifice        howling winds               betrayers veil
fury of the storm         beggars gambit              phantom walk
solar flare               courageous heart            shadow swap
phoenix flash             battlemaster                blanket of darkness

The priest may choose only two of these boons; those choices are limited to
those offered by their direct paragon deity, and any allied paragons.  The
choices of boons made are life-long, irreversible and final.

The framework is coded for the skill and picking boons, what remains is to code and write helpfiles for each individual spell (2 down out of 36). I'll roll the rest of this out over a week or two. Its obviously not going to get done in one all-nighter, and I'm not going to write all these helpfiles myself. I'll try to do at least 2 a day so we make progress.

sedgwicks favor - done
shepherd the weak
unforgiving
light of sarich
communion
perform miracle
earths blessing
strength of the earth
heavenly sacrifice
fury of the storm
solar flare
phoenix flash
lightning strikes twice
supreme armor
long arm of the law
roll out the barrel
mists of arcana
arcane focus
embrace yin
seize yang
howling winds
beggars gambit
courageous heart
battlemaster
bloodbath
dragon blood
armageddon
devouring plague
shackles of ice
touch of frost
corrosive spray
calamitous acid
betrayers veil
phantom walk
shadow swap
blanket of darkness - done

Is it going to be mandatory to have to go along with religions, or may we have the option to not even associate a priest to a religion?

Well let me ask you this. Who does an atheist priest commune his supplications to? They are not simply "casting spells" innately like mages do. In the world of Serin the gods can be taken for granted as absolutely real. There's no room for doubt. An atheist priest would be an "outcast" or something.
People have raised the "god-less" option before and I said go Zafrin/disregard because its the closest.

If you're looking for polytheistic, on the other hand, I think we're probably going to get there down the road. I'd like to eventually have a plain cleric class that gets specced into one of healer/shaman/druid (or, alternatively, stays with the common crap baseline skills and spells). But certainly stuff like boons, tattoos, etc, will always require a firm religious commitment. You have to draw a line in the sand somewhere for things like that. Also healers/shamans are not suitable for a flexy choice
