The LAWFUL ethos, what does it mean?

Hi all,
I'm curious about how you perceive the lawful ethos and what pitfalls I could potentially fall in, with it.

I've been reading through some graveyard discussions and something kind of similar came up with chaotic vs neutral so I want to get this clarified before I commit to some RP crime.

Does lawful mean I have to comply with all laws/rules or a selected set of laws/rules?

In essence, can a Lawful Good knight murder an evil player in the middle of Seringale, under the assumption that is he is lawful towards the knights ruleset?

Can a Lawful Evil Assassin murder someone in the middle of Seringale, under the assumption that he is lawful towards whoever he works for?

This is always my concern with the lawful ethos.
How literally is it taken? Is it follow THE laws or follow a law (or code or whatever).

I hope this makes sense?

Here at AR lawful means follow THE laws. No attacking in town, period. All that other stuff about laws in seringale, Timaran, and solace

That's not true Rothak, it was changed. Yes, a lawful Valourian would be inclined towards Valourian morals/rules. A lot more leeway has been given, but Lawful knights get wanted every so often now because their duty to knights is stronger than their duty to the laws of Seringale.

Edit, Vev posted the helpfile before I could, I was posting it when I saw her post. The second paragraph matters most to your question I think.

Code:

Choosing a lawful ethos is a very deep commitment.  It means that you are
demonstrating a willingness to obey all the laws and follow all the orders
that have been given by a recognised superior authority.  To lawfuls, a
lawful society is a place in which they may be confident that others will
act as they should.  Qualities of lawful characters (regardless of
alignment) are typically, honor, trustworthiness, obedience to authority,
and reliability.  Conversely, lawfuls can also be close-minded, overly
traditional and judgmental.

It is common that heroic characters will run into conflict between their
lawful ethos and alignment.  For example, a Lawful Good faces a deep
dilemma of whether to uphold a sworn oath when it may bring harm to
innocents, and whenever there are laws that conflict - his cabal's laws
versus the local law of the towns.  However, a Lawful Evil will simply
weigh the risk of getting caught versus the potential benefits.  Since
Abandoned Realms has a significant Immortal presence, an evil will obey laws
rather than risk the wrath of the gods of order.  Lawful neutral characters
adhere most strongly to the law.

Being lawful does not imply that you have a right to enforce the rules and
laws in absence of policement. Nevertheless, there are benefits to being lawful.

Best way to roleplay darth vader is to make a dark-knight Justice.
