A Scrolls in the Sands

The scroll you find is bound between two beautiful rollers made of
metallic bronze, with the end-caps wrapped in a smooth light-brown leather.
As you unravel the scroll to read its contents, the top of the page is
marked with a seal: a three-headed serpent on a shield with two spears
crossed behind it. The handwriting is elegant, written in a crimson ink
with flourishes on every stemmed letter.
"To think... I would stoop to record the events that have transpired. But
scrolls have the benefit of longevity, and will outlast my spoken word,
which at the moment has little weight...
I am Sylac Bronzescale, the Sun Prince, heir to the Swavelinia, or as you
Serins call them, the Sands of Sorrow. But I have been robbed of my
inheritance, only for the crime of doing what I could to save my people. My
father, capable a warrior as he was, fell in battle against the Ogre Tribes.
Though it would besmirch my honor, I made a tactical retreat to regather our
forces. Green around the gills, it is custom for the Swaveli to not crown a
King who has not won a battle. So, I set to planning.
It did not take a master of war to see we were outnumbered and outmatched
beyond hope. My people, proud as we are, shun the use of magic... But I
saw little other options to save them. I sought out what powerful magics I
could learn that would destroy my enemies, whatever the cost may be. It was
not long before my eyes came across the name of a being who prides
themselves on utter domination of their opponents. I set my best seers to
the task of attempting to reach out to this being, to see what aid they
could provide for us. Alas, just prior to finishing the forbidden ritual,
we were caught... And banished from the Swavelinia.
In my Exile, I have learned the terrible weight behind the name 'Thorgoth
the Conqueror'. But the knowledge I sought and acquired has bound me to
him. Nonetheless, I seek to restore my honor among my people. By my blood,
I have sworn off the use of magic, so that it may never taint my mind or my
body. I have trained my skills so that I will become worthy of the Halls of
the Warlords. And with the Grandest title that their halls have to offer, I
will return to my people, a proven warrior of honor and prowess.

Dear fellow Scholars,
Today I spent my time exploring the Ethereal Plane. Below are some of my
findings, based on what I have experienced myself and from previous
studies in collaboration with Oakwarl, the treant druid.
These efforts were made possible using the Ethereal Portal purchased
from Ming the Mystical for a goodly sum of relics. It is not recommended
to enter this state without adequate preparation, full belly and a slaked
thirst, for one cannot interact with anything in the Ethereal State.
This makes the Ethereal Plane quite dangerous for anyone who cannot cast
spells, for the Word of Recall and Sanctuary have gotten me out of
several scrapes already!
Research Findings:
- Druids enter this state by mounting their white stag.
- Others cannot see you, unless you are present in the room.
- When you walk, you are soundless.
- In fact, you cannot speak, though you may wave your hands and such
to attempt to communicate.
- You can still send messages to others, as well as scribe notes, and
speak to one's group and halls through such channels of communication.
- It is uncertain if spellcasters are disadvantaged here due to uttering,
however, prayers are possible (and life-saving!)
- All of the world's inhabitants become ghostly, and most will not notice

you as you move amongst them. Indeed, you will not be seen in the local
vicinity by anyone in the area, and perhaps may not be seen from a
distance, either.
- Everything looks strange in the Ethereal Plane, making even the most
familiar landscapes foreign and strange. It is very easy to get lost.
- You cannot attack anyone while in the Ethereal State. However, there
are some creatures that exist across the two planes of reality that
can and will attack! They tend to be quite strong, too. Ones I have
encountered are the vampire priest south of Timaran and a number of
creatures in the Plains of Winter.
- You can exit the Ethereal Plane using the portal you entered from,
but this does not stay open forever. If the portal closes before you
finish your exploration, do not despair! There is a curious interaction
between one's corporeal form and the Void past the Holy Grove which can
return you to our normal world.
- Such a phenomenon suggests to me that we can only enter the Plane in one
time and space, and cannot cross time while within it. What causes this
this reaction remains a mystery and deserves further investigation.

to the Ethereal Plane, I seek a collaborator to further explore its

Serptius. In my seclusion I have found power. In my most bitter and
hateful moment, I killed my soul so that it would no longer feel the pain.
I had control of myself for the first time since Equient killed himself.
The power I discovered was in this new control, the power of complete
domination through total spiritual and emotional death. I am now alone, but
I have the power to conquer the world in my new knowledge. Since the light
would not unite through my love and acceptance they will now be forced to
unite under my wrath. My soul is undead, my body is immortal and I seek to
gain infinite power and no longer be the fool I have been for so long. It
is impossible for me to elucidate the infinite amount of emotions and
thoughts I have at every moment, so I will give you a journal of my
thoughts, a diary of sorts. You may do what you wish with my thoughts, but
I do wish them to be known, as it is a way for me to spread my wrath in all
who would not accept me.

I. Love - Love is impossible in Serin. Love is total dedication,
obsession, and loyalty to someone other than yourself. Love is fulfillment
of the need we all have for a companion, and brings happiness and lust.
These things are direct signs of weakness. Any who is willing to sacrifice
themselves for another is a fool. If you willingly allow someone else to
gain power, you give them the opportunity to destroy you, and they will
destroy you when given the chance. They will destroy you through your love
for them, through your dedication to them, and through your total obsession
in them. They are able to have power and control over you, which allows for
you to be easily manipulated and not truly understand yourself. Love
creates a fog of disillusionment, which will make you less aware of
everything which you may experience or think. This weakness will cause the
downfall of any man or woman in Serin. It caused my downfall. The one that
I loved is now gone forever. I relied on him, was dedicated to him, was
obsessed with him, I was part of him and he was part of me. Now I am
nothing, my body is eternally undying and my soul lives in the realm of the
dead; dead love. I am destroyed because of this Love I felt.

II. Luck - Fortune, chance, and luck are things that only fools rely on.
They take advantage of things that they should have never had in the first
place. They stumble into opportunities and gain power in what they do not
deserve. The less one relies on luck the stronger and more true their gain
will be. If someone must fight for what they earn, rather than stumbling
into it, then they truly deserve whatever they achieve. They have proven
themselves worthy of their position. We should earn our achievements, they
are a sign of power and rank. One who relies on luck is weak, they have
nothing to back their achievements or claims. They will be quickly seen for
the fake that they are and disgraced in their positions. Luck by definition
will never last forever, so do not rely on it to get you by.
III. Loyalty - True loyalty is developed through fear. If I wish for
someone to be loyal to me, they must totally fear me. Without their fear
you have nothing to guarantee they will stay true to you. In order to gain
true power, you must have the total loyalty of all around you. They will be
your servants, your slaves, and you can do with them whatever you wish, but
only with their fear. If they do not fear you then they may become corrupt
and seek to rebel from you and kill you. This sort of disloyalty can cause
others to loose their fear and no longer be loyal to you. In order to
maintain power, loyalty, and fear you must quickly wipe out any why begin to
become disloyal. They must be killed and brought back into their place of
fear and loyalty to you. I have never had any soul be truly loyal to me
except through love. This is because I cause no fear. No soul in Serin
would think to fear me, because I have been passive and never harmed a soul
intentionally. This is why I do not have their loyalty, they leave me
whenever they please and do not care about how I feel. Loyalty can only be

IV. Possessions - In destroying others to gain their loyalty you will
come by many useless possessions, for which you have no need. Though you
may wish to hold on to them, it is weakness to do such, and can lead to your
defeat. There is no better way to be sure of keeping a possession than to
destroy it. If you plan to keep something to give to your most faithful
servant, then you are a fool because you will be helping another gain power
that could potentially be turned against you. You should wear only what you
need, and it should be the finest things in Serin. Many will fear you only
because of your possessions then you will not need to slay them unless they
become corrupt and lose their fear. Do not hold on to what you do not need,
this is foolish and does you no good. It is a sign of weakness. I have
always had the finest possessions in the land, and have gained much respect
because of this. However now I am naked, I have nothing and have seen that
now I have lost the respect of many. If this is ever to happen, then you
should quickly equip yourself and turn on those who loose respect, show them
that you can defeat them with nothing. In doing this you will gain their
total loyalty and respect, because they see that you do not need possessions
to have power.

V. Death - Death is constant and eternal. It is everyone's destiny to
die. Death is unavoidable, and is the cause for the so-called life that
many live. We are all dead in everything we do. Death never changes, it is
not subject to the chaotic winds that control what we call life. In the
process of trying vainly to avoid death, we are always overcome by it.
Death is controlling and total. There is no avoiding death, so it should be
embraced as part of living. In my life I have died very little, my body is
in near perfect condition, yet my soul is completely dead. My body will not
soon join my soul in the totality and completeness of death.

VI. Soul - The soul is what makes us who we are, it gives us personality
and is what makes us unique from others. It is what is in our soul that
affects and creates our physical bodies and our thoughts. The soul is also
most susceptible to weaknesses. Love is the total weakness of the soul. It
dominates our body and controls our thoughts so must be avoided at all
costs. The soul must be guarded with much care against emotions which may
cause weakness. Lust, greed, anger, joy, happiness, jealousy and many other
emotions can quickly go from the body or thoughts to corrupt the soul. I
have allowed my soul to be corrupted many times by these useless emotions.
Only now am I beginning to be able to see through them all with my total
emotional death and seclusion from Serin.
VII. Emotions - Emotions are constantly changing, fluctuating from one
extreme to the other and can not be depended on. They cause weakness and
faulty judgement, so it is vital to destroy them hastily and without mercy,
before they dominate you. Emotions are also strongly influenced by others,
which is obvious weakness. If you must rely on someone else then you are a
fool and do not deserve anything. You will be defeated time and time again
until you learn to control and focus your emotions into thoughtless actions.
I have often relied on others to make me feel happy, but this happiness
always ends in sadness and depression. This weakness brought me to total
defeat, and only after many years of seclusion have I been able to defeat
them completely.
VIII. Law - The law of Serin is constant and unchanging, yet the
enforcers of this law allow emotions and their soul to dominate their
actions. They are not true to the law. The laws of the land should be
followed at all costs. It is only a weakness if you are so weak as to be
unable to wait for your victim to leave the city limits to destroy them.
They are in fear if they hide from you by using the law, so it is pointless
to slay them. There is nothing to be gained by slaying those who are
already in fear and are loyal to you. If you allow yourself to become
wanted you are foolish because you are allowing another to gain power at
your expense. You will eventually be apprehended and as a result loose
experience and equipment. If you wish to have true power then you should
use the law to your advantage. Use the safety in towns to provoke fear in
your slaves without actually having to put effort into slaying them. I have
followed the law my whole life and have seen it as a refuge because it, like
death, is unchanging. I can gain power and respect of others through the
law, and I will not risk strengthening another buy breaking the laws.

IX. Evil - I see many who claim to be evil in Serin, but very few of
them truly understand evil as I do. Evil is not killing every person you
see. Evil is not mocking a person or calling them names. Evil's greatest
weapon is fear. It does not take killing every weakling of Serin to be
feared. It is killing those who have power, who are respected, who like to
talk that will create true fear in the citizens. True evil wishes to have
total domination and power. They are not corrupted by emotions, they do not
allow love to taint their souls, and they do not rely on luck. They will
totally embrace death and destruction with lack of weakness. Though I am
seen as a healer, and good, I can no longer truly belong to these things
because I have become evil. My soul was corrupted and now has found the
truth of being, which was in evil.
X. Neutral - The path of neutrality is defeat in itself. If one does
not choose a path in life then they will not achieve any sort of true power.
There is no true neutral path; a neutral will only sway from good to evil,
and because of this, can never totally dominate. Their lack of faith and
consistent weaving between good and evil cause them to be simple targets.
Because of this, it is not always necessary to slay them in order to make
them fear you and gain their respect. It is quite simple to gain the
respect and loyalty of those from this path, since they are weak and easily
persuaded in the idiocy of their disbelief. I have seen many of this path
try to be friends to all, but it is only foolishness, they can truly side
with no one and will quickly be surrounded by their enemies on both sides.

XI. Good - Being truly good is impossible in Serin. There are so many
different beliefs and justifications for the lightwalkers purpose. There is
no unity; it is not possible because there is no absolute good or absolute
good path to follow. Those who attempt in vain to be good only weaken
themselves. They rely on emotions and on each other, even though they are
constantly fighting amongst themselves. They feel that they must help
others, and many will even assist their enemies. This is foolishness and
will only be taken advantage of. I have tried to walk a true and good path
through my whole life, but it has done me no good. Though I try to share
and help others, I still have my brethren insult me, and I never have escape
from pain and misery. Because of this I can no longer call myself one of
the light. No one can truly and completely be of the light, it is
impossible, or I would have achieved it already.

XII. Chaos - Chaos is the cause of disruption and confusion. This can
be taken advantage of at times, but often is like luck and the chaos is just
as likely to fall on you as on any other. Chaos can not be relied on,
simply because of its nature, it is chaotic. Chaos does not consider its
actions, it does not weight outcomes. Chaos relies on impulse and on
extreme emotions. Though it is my body's nature to be chaotic like a storm,
I have learned, through time, that hasty and chaotic judgements will only
lead to a fall.
XIII. Immortals - Those who are Immortals have earned respect. They
were not placed in their position because of some foolish whim. They know
all of Serin inside and out. Rebellion against the Immortals is pointless
and will only lessen your own power. The Immortals should be carefully
nursed like a golden calf -all expense should be taken to please them. This
is not strengthening them because Immortals already have ultimate power over
mortals. However, one should try to take advantage of the Immortals powers
by keeping them pleased and respecting their rules. I have had many
encounters with Immortals, and it has always been to my benefit to make sure
that I please them and keep them happy.
XIV. Honor - Honor is a state of being which involves doing what is
right rather than what seems best. This can be used to your advantage if
you do not let honor keep you from doing what you must do. If others see
you as honorable they will often respect you and obey you. However doing
what is totally honorable often means giving up certain opportunities which
could give you advancement. It is vital to be able to take advantage of
your honorable name while doing dishonest actions. Concealing any dishonor
you may be charged with is the key to this. I have been seen as honorable
my whole life, and it has always been an advantage. People trust me easily
just because of my name. Remember that honor does not always have to be
given in truth, you can often manipulate your way to having honor.

XV. Kindness - Kindness sets you up for immediate downfall. Those who
are kind have no authority over others. They are not feared, or respected.
Kindness only brings power to others at your own expense. Many will not
even be grateful for whatever your sacrifice for them. Allowing another to
gain power or status will only degrade yourself. Kindness and generosity
are the ultimate weaknesses which inevitably lead to destruction. You must
take advantage of others foolish kindness. Kindness can and should be
imitated in order to gain others trust, but only if it can be done without
really being helpful and without sacrificing yourself. You should always
act as if everyone is thankful to you for your actions, because whatever you
choose to do will increase your strength, which everyone should be thankful
for. I have received nothing but anguish for my kindness. Kindness was
never returned to me and never was of any benefit except to those whom I
foolishly sacrificed myself for.
XVI. Friendship - Friends will wear you out like a toy, then when they
become bored, they will reject and forget about you. Friends will only
weaken you as you try to be kind to them and help them. They suck the life
out of you like the most vicious and deadly vampire, and when they are
finished simply toss you aside to die. Never care for anyone as a friend
because some day you may have to slay them in order to gain power for
yourself. If there is some fool who wishes to become your friend be sure to
Take full advantage of them until their spirit dies. I have always had many
friends and they have always let me down. They only are my friends when
they need my aid, but seem to forget me when I am the one in need.
XVII. Rejection - Rejection is as inevitable as death. Everything, no
matter how much effort is put forth will lead to rejection when you depend
on others. The only way to avoid this is to never depend on any other soul
for anything you need. If you are rejected it is a sign of your weakness
and incapability to please others. In order to maintain control without
being rejected you must have complete power and confidence in everything you
do; never doubting yourself or your abilities. It is also vital to know how
to take advantage of those who look for acceptance in you. Rejection is the
key to killing the soul. A rejected and lonely soul will eventually die as
mine has, leaving nothing but hatred. It took me more than fifty years of
being rejected to see how useless it is to try and gain acceptance. Do not
make the same mistake I have made.

1. My second adventure of the day led me to the Chapel south of Timaran. It
2. is unknown what name this chapel once held. Unlike other chapels, where
3. prayer, song and light resonate from the walls, this one echoes with screams
4. of the damned. It is chilling to be sure. On entry, one is met with not
5. nuns or priests but grinning vampires of some ethereal nature that flit here
6. and there through the passageways like ghosts. They also do not speak, or
7. seem to understand when one tries to converse with them. This could be
8. because of a language barrier, if they are not learned of our common tongue.
9. Or, perhaps, their minds were simply stolen before they were brought back to
10. unlife.

12. The only clue to the founding of this chapel is found on a pulpit near the
13. entrance: A dense, thick tome full of the twisted perspective of a fallen
14. healer. This woman was known as Nara Serptius, who stood in the same rank
15. in her guild as I do now, and furthermore scribed her name as the Infinite
16. Wrath of Rejection. In the many chapters she lays out reasons why she fell
17. from the light and became bitter because of it. Something terrible had
18. happened to her, causing her to lose trust in all she met, and instead she
19. had become consumed by the desire for power, and the need to be feared.

Journal #6: Another loss
Day of the Dark Ages, 11th Renewal of the Celestial of Death
The names of the days are taunting me.
I was in the Chapel this eve, reading the age-worn journal of a healer who
fell from the light. As I began to write an analysis of it, a familiar
friendly voice broke through the silence from afar: that of my friend, the
Warlord and Slith Prince, Sylac.
I had learned of him from reading his background scroll, and since learning
of his beautiful story had always been a staunch supporter of his efforts to
redeem his honor and return to his people. He told me that battle was the
way he earned honor. As I told him about my new dedication to the Physical
world, he suggested that we might fight as another way for me to learn, and
as it was his realm of expertise, I agreed.
I should not have done this! I knew, have known, in every fiber of my
being, that violence never results in a happy ending.
The fight we agreed upon was a friendly duel to the stun, and he selected
the arena of Gnome Village, in which I stumbled from house to tiny house,
trying not to be squashed. After a moment I stumbled my way into the
maze-like dungeons beneath the village, which neither of us was familiar
with, and proceeded to do the things I am apparently best at: napping and
sitting on my bottom while praying furiously.
For some reason, once he found me, Sylac kept throwing himself at me, even
as my healing miraculously outpaced his attacks. And then, somehow, out of
sheer luck, the divine retribution my Lord Kedaleam wrapped around me landed
but a scratch on Sylac's skin and he was kneeling, defeated.
I have never wanted to defeat a friend!
As soon as I saw him kneeling I rushed to heal him, and tried to help him as
best I could. But he kept saying the words... "depressing"... I saw the
slump in his shoulders and noticed how he would not look me in the eye. I
should have done something, anything - but my healing had done all I could,
and then he was simply walking away. I thought he was angry and so I didn't
want to run after him. And then...
And then, the bell tolled.
For my friend.
He took his life because I had hurt him - not his physical body as much as
his honor.
I think, if Nara knew, she would be laughing at how I feel. But I cannot
think as she does, not with her disdain for emotions and love and
friendship. I do not know what to write. I do not know what to write! My
friend... Prince Sylac... I am so sorry.
I would give you words of comfort, but I feel it would betray the finality that real death in AR. If there's anything I learned from this series of logs, it is that our characters, and hence our creativity, have a real and measurable impact on this community. What a wonderful tribute to everyone who invests in opportunities to really roleplay.
All I will say is that Davairus' comment in your first log was spot on. I will just elaborate by saying this:
Many times, we build up expectations of characters in our mind that are difficult to meet. If we lack the skill to successfully develop that character into our image of them, there is a disconnect that creates a negative experience around playing that character. I admire anyone who has the tenacity (pun intended) to see through adversity (7-wins, 24-losses, OOF). Since Sylac, I have focused on creating characters that have such adversity woven into their background. That way, when I suck, I can at least say it's all part of the character :).
