    1. One thing is to avoid chaining commands if you can. Try and get a feel for the lags on each spell so you don't have to stack them. If you didn't have a cure crit queued up at the end there you should have been able word out when you saw him enter the forest.

      With a fight like this it's purely attrition. You need to try and land a deteriorate or blind and then get a bit of distance to heal up. Of course against a player like Hraozen it's going to be difficult to do, because he's probably just going to disengage if you land one of those.

      Unless the mechanics for spellbreak changed, you can only gain the benefits of the highest spellbreak item in your possession when casting a specific spell type and any other spellbreaks are ignored. They do NOT stack. I see four maledictive break items: the head item (crown), the double tongued belt on your waist (which is also an afflictive break), the leggings, and that mindflayer robe about your body. The leggings and robe probably both take away hp, so you're essentially gimping yourself by wearing both those break items regardless of their strengths. The crown doesn't take away hp, and the belt actually gives 20 hp but also penalizes luck...

      Even putting aside that mistake with the spellbreak items, your equipment probably isn't in the same league as Hraozen's, which means it'll be tough to win against him.
    3. Put all your trains and practices into your hp, i don't know why yours is so low. Consider 1 practicing in the future if you are going to spend 100 hours anyway. Or make a duergar. The darkenbeast makes for the best shrunken head in the game.

      He has barkskin your flame weapon is useless if he uses gingko check the log with dogran dying to some noob ranger for further proof. His barkskin allows protection from a variety of elements, but he can only choose one.

      Also he is a raknos, id go vainglory to see if it does extra damage as he has a vuln to holy.

      Not that his pets are the real problem, but plague one of them. He will either release the pet immediately and if he doesn't notice the plague will pass on to him.

      Lastly get malicious beast and pray someone will take you to get torments of hell. Even then their is so much save equipment it doesn't even seem worth trying or worth the effort and wait.

      only the highest savebreak value in each category counts toward one's ability to savebreak.
      So you can wear a savebreak item in each category, but yes they don't stack.

      So don't wear 4 mal break items, but you can wear 1 mal 1 aff 1 mental break if u wanted without any penalty.

" I meant the highest of each type of break is the only one that counts when casting spells pf that type (afflictive, maledictive, mental) (though I believe the orb of ensnarement explicitly gives spell break... A very weak one, but it's all three types in one item nonetheless).

      Fighting over water is one of the best things you can do against a ranger because it stops dirt kick (rangers may be excellent at skirmishing but they don't have many things they can do while actually in combat). While I wouldn't recommend going into Emerald Forest in circumstances like the one you were in at the end of the log, if you had been in a state and position to be fighting the section towards Zodiac Island would've been a decent place to stand your ground. Though personally, unless I were dangerously low on movement points and I wanted to fight over water while my opponent was chasing me south of Seringale, I'd head to the Ford instead.

      Also, I wouldn't bother casting plague on his pets most of the time. There's only a 24 hour cooldown before he can call another of each type (longer, I suppose, for the wolf because he has to wait for warcry to wear off). Furthermore, unless you successfully land blindness or he has already used them, he can always use his herbs to cure the plague if he catches it himself.

      As far as my expertise goes, I won't claim to be the foremost expert on either side of this battle, but I've played both sides. I'm not the best PKer out there either, I'd consider myself at best a bit above average. Anyway, I had a Raknos ranger fairly recently... They're better than a weretiger in my opinion due to certain perks. As for the shaman, I've not played many but I have an unclaimed character who was taught the ropes and some tricks by a more experienced shaman.

  2. It has been a while since we've had a fight log posted for the purpose of learning and it is refreshing to see. Not sure if you're a returning player just trying a new class, or a new community member on one of their first characters, but either way thanks for putting yourself out there and asking for learning opportunities.     7. Its true, the only thing the ranger did was chase and murder. We could code an AI trainer for that. Instead of the effort of searching, it would be given a nudge to move to your current area entrance every 2-5 min and then move towards you. All done at 2 rooms/sec, avoiding hazards, and simply recalling if an algorithm predicts losing. Other than knowing the exact area the opponent is in, all of that could be done inside cmud. then we wont need players ozaru, we can just load in bots and watch that

    1. well its like, wtf, just read the log properly. he clearly lost without even hitting his opponent, and it is incredibly obvious he panicked and was going to die. the shaman did not get his ass kicked until he allowed himself get attacked in town (bad decision) and thus unable to escape via word of recall. then he runs to... emerald forest treehouse (bad decision). this all looks like scramble mode to me. the poor decision making aside, it is impressive he was able to even pass door into the treehouse with high heart rate and fingers probably shaking. However, quickly after you commit such dumb mistake, you'll know that you may as well have given up and just sat at the pit in the temple of darkness so you can more quickly loot yourself. alternatively, just play better. three times this player recalls, his opponent knows right away he did it. running to zodiac island and recalling before your opponent reaches the area, so that big poof of smoke does not give away the fact you have recalled, and giving you a head start to a different hiding spot - thats how you shake somebody off your tail. once you are confident you are hard to kill, the pk shakes subside (maybe even totally disappear), and a cdecent fight is in reach. but right now, that player is running like a noob
    2. You never truly lose the shakes entirely. I did fairly well on my last two characters and still felt like I had palsy when fighting Hraozen or every third Ozaru clone.

    4. I would recommend you start with learning how to run from one area to another and getting comfortable with the routes. You can walk around the shops in Seringale and ask for a TASK that will send you to a random area around the world. Combine this with the CODEX on the website (or ask for help in game - even better!) to make a little gold while you practice.

      Once you have the routes down pat, you can use the WHERE or AREA commands to see when you've crossed the line into a new area so that you can duck in and recall without sending out that area-wide echo. Try to explore around and find all the exits in an area so you know how you can circle around. The River Adelon (Seringale, Timaran, Gnome Village) have a ton of these opportunities.

      As a shaman, I wouldn't be afraid to blow even most of your mana on healing. You did a lot of sleeping to recover and died with 700 mana. Winning with a shaman is about (ok, sometimes having OP gear or) controlling the pace of the fight - retreat and run around to heal when you're getting pounded (smart to have the fly scrolls) and try for the maladictions when you can soak the hits. If you have detect magic up, you can CONSIDER your opponent to get a sense of their saves. You've got a varied enough toolbox that you can exploit any weakness of your foes. Deteriorate and Blindness are your friends.

      Finally, don't be afraid to eat some deaths like this one along the way. You get 61 of them for a reason ;-).

  5. Tsabnar I just want to reiterate a couple things:

    1 - absolutely awesome job on posting the log to try to learn from. When I was trying to ascend from stage 2 many eons ago I would log every fight and try to see what I did wrong and what the enemy did right and come up with some ideas for improvement. It’s a bonus that you also get tips from helpful members of the community.

    2 - absolutely don’t feel bad about being killed by Hraozen. I don’t know who plays this character but they are very skilled. They would give any of the elite players in the game a good fight.

    3 - as people have said, try to think of an escape plan before you’re under attack. Some great tips from above, use a flight scroll, run far away, step into the entrance of an area and recall (bonus points if you know what city he recalls to do you can run far from that - hopefully it’s not the same as yours).

    4 - role play might help fend off some killers - either letting them know you’re trying to figure things out (so they take it easy on you), befriending them, or ganging up on him with in game friends.

    5 - great eq tips above.

    6 - keep it up! Fight fight fight and log log log. You will see so much improvement with fight->analyze->fight. I’ll be cheering for you!
    1. Just a heads up, this guy you are calling "very skilled" is slaughtering lower level players who are solo ranking. This is farming a fresh character for rating, i.e. textbook padding / bottom feeding. We really don't need his ego pampered .

      I think Hraozen is very skilled too, but that's obviously from years of grinding and min/maxing the chars. The playstyle of the char seems to be conservatively farming their way to the top without taking any risks or disadvantages for the fun factor. Seems like a yet another tryhard char that uses every mechanic available from bottom feeding to calculated survival that includes logging out when things may get hairy and simply not fighting unless with perfect advantage and cooldowns are available.
    3. I had no idea if this guy is new or not. He recalled, ran around, and I caught him while curing. He closed the door to buy extra time for a recall if he saw me it open, which is good thinking. But, I anticipated that and used a misty potion. I log on and fight what fights I can. From intense fights with mico, ozaru, ashlyn, nadrin, ashlyn, kalist, to not as intense fights with others. To start a band wagon of I'm bottom feeding blah blah is just excessive and unnecessary.

      Tsabnar was level 49 btw, not a lowbie. Thank you.

      If you are a new player, I recommend the NEW tag for a while until you get the grasps of things. I agree with Ceridwel though, I appreciate you throwing yourself out here on the logboard seeking advice, granted it's turned into another Dav/Mico tag-team the player of Hraozen...that's beside the point though.

      That includes you Davairus. I think you are an elite pker and I'd love to see a davairus vs hraozen fight. I think it would go for a very long time and I'd love to watch it. It can be hard to convey meaning through text so let me say that I'm saying this completely sincerely - I would really, really like to see that fight (or like best of 7).

      If Hraozen wanted they probably could have joined warlords and kicked some serious ass there. Maybe they have a super cool plan in the works. I don't know, I haven't interacted enough with the character enough in game to figure out their motivations and their goals. I'm definitely not going to shit on the character because they killed a level 49 shaman. This isn't hello kitty adventure island. The gauntlet is called 'the gauntlet' for a reason.

      Take it from me - don't judge the 'playstyle of a player' based solely on the 'playstyle of a character'. You can make totally different characters with totally different playstyles and agendas.

      Twerp yes some people here play for the thrill of ascending to the top of the pyramid. The beauty of AR is there are may ways to play. You can play for the RP and camaraderie, you can play to contribute to the lore of the game, you can read about a super cool char in a book and think 'omg I really want to be an awesome human invoker', you can play to be the ultimate in terms of 'max kills, min deaths' (avoiding cabal and disengaging if the battle is going poorly is a good idea for this), etc. Here at AR the world is your oyster.

      That's something that makes AR great - there are so many ways to enjoy it. Nobody needs to play the exact way you want or expect them to play. It all melds together to create a great shared experience.
    5. "the gauntlet" is just an excuse some vets use to bottom-feed. i'm not surprised to see the denial about it, but its why I dont play friday surges anymore. anyway, you dont need to be elite to "beat" this guy. just use your shaman or healer to defend until he logs off fuming. i already gave this recommendation. if they give up and logout it means you won
    6. "the gauntlet" is a term that was created ~15 years ago to describe the horror of trying to go from 42-50 when there were swathes of enemies at 50 coming at you every waking moment - trying to slaughter you and make your life a living hell. Multikills, full loots, purposeful mob deaths and gangbangs were rampant. It was essentially unheard of to see someone go from 42-50 without a single gruesome death/full loot combo.

      We still use the term to describe 'the death run' from 42 to 50 but we all know it is nothing like it used to be.

      You don't play friday surges anymore because of the gauntlet? There are vets bottom feeding on fridays? All the time? I haven't seen that.

      @Hraozen don't change anything you do. I've learned numerous things from logs people post of you killing them. Your skills used, when you flee, etc. (see: Hraozen v Tearea- Deathmatch Edition). The realms need efficient killers, it's all part of the experience. Seems like a lot of werebeast rangers appeared once you began making a name for yourself. Well done. Can't wait to try to PK you again (key word there is TRY). I've literally made preparations just for you.

      The secret to success is quite easy here for Hraozen from the streams I've seen.

      Hometown Timaran, so drag fights to Drkshtyre or anywhere west. When hp goes <40% get recall sack|quaff recall. Run a loop to heal up then go camo until your cooldowns for herb/transform come up then skirmish again until stars align and you get a lucky dunk.

      coming to think of it, recall potions are probably the single most OP thing in the game, without those or some changes to those, there would be 2x or even 3x the bodycount. Even word of recall is shittier because it can backfire and gives you round of lag even upon success. Recall pots are literally better than the spell itself.

      Hraozen would not be having such success if he could not cheese, same with Flinnegan and all the other conservatives.
    10. Right now I dont play at all so I'm just talking about when I was actively playing. I stopped playing on fridays because it was a discord gank-a-thon. if I was by chance playing on a friday and the surge was coming up I would just log out before it started. Players can rank up on AR any other time of the week without "casuals" logging in to bottom-feed.
      One time I played on a Friday surge I just sat a group at the kaddar faeries without attempting to level and killed evils as they logged in and walked their way over. AR tower defense edition

    22. thanks for the tips everyone! i love hearing you go back and forth so i can skim more info off the top. the encounter in Seringale was actually planned. i wanted to see how well i could do fully prepared, which did not go as expected. hopefully i can continue to post logs and get good feedback.

This wasn't fully prepared ... that would required at least level 50. fighting at a lower level just makes all of your spells harder to land and makes all skills (e.g. dirt kicks) land easier. Not to mention the potential extra hp. Plus the equipment disadvantage. This sums up to a fight that is very unfair. I'm not sure what there can be to learn from this. I see somebody who wants to be more than just PvE'ing gank fodder, which is a nice goal to have. Just dont be shy to criticize this game's balance and gankers. It doesnt have to always be just me

    25. the point i just made was missed.. its ganking that is not to be embraced. what i said about PvE stuff can be left out of consideration completely here, its irrelevant to the log at hand. I'm not writing this post to discuss quests and tutorials, crafting, or winter runs, or especially to say "this isnt hello kitty" or call anybody care-bears. This is just a candid observation of the game's PK balance.

      on one side of this equation is a guy who has been working hard solo ranking for hours/week/month or whatever it is. and on the other is someone running around looking for people levelling and already 3/4 hp. where is the fun here? who is having it? who is taking all the risk? who gets all the reward? most of all, does this look balanced? i would say no.

      And to anyone else who thinks I'm bashing a playstyle. Well what kind of playstyle do you call Tsabnar's, then? Defenseless victim? That's a playstyle? How about we all just level up shamans then, and just run around with them in shitty gear, wasting people's time. The goal should be PVP balanced with risk/reward on both sides, and that actually would be balanced, since now it means the ganker actually has something to lose - their free time. Of course, this is assuming they value that, which seems hard to say
    26. Come on guys, we all know this decades old common practice procedure when it come to PK in AR and you see somebody in your pk range....
      1.) PRAY in game asking if player is newer cause some people might not know.., and if that puts them on the pk-exempt list.
      2.) PRAY in game asking if the player has been grinding by solo ranking, and if ranking by yourself somehow puts them on the pk-exempt list.
      3.) PRAY in game asking if lvl 49 is considered a "lowbie" as Dav described it, and if that puts that player on the pk-exempt list.
      4.) PRAY in game, asking if there's anything you missed that would put that player on the pk-exempt list.
      5.) Twiddle thumbs while waiting for answers to allow you to play the PK GAME.

      I usually avoid ganking anyone who is below "Unlocked many secrets/experienced explorer" - If they are at Has begun to do some travelling or Travelled a lot or whatever, i consider them as newbies. It's not perfect, but that's at least one way to try and pick equal opponents.
    28. I found out if people are new or not by murdering them, unless a couple of things have happened first. One every character I play has mentor turned on, so I answer newbie chat questions etc. If I know someone is an obvious newbie then I leave it up to rp if they get killed or not, but I definitely don't kill and loot newbies. (Not saying this is what happened here) Then, if those points aren't met and I decide to murder someone, well I make the attempt. If I just completely utterly dunk them, then I wait at their corpse to make sure they are able to get back to it, and if not show them where it is, etc. Finally, if it turns out that I killed a total noob, I start up some more rp with them and give them terms for me not to murder them again. IE I killed that one paladin guy for assisting the knights and Ilromie when we were fighting back and forth. Afterwards, I led him to his body and talked to him. We didn't fight again after.

Its always been like that, it isnt hello kitty, it circulates rares, its fun to gank, some people enjoy ganks because its funny to read logs, etc etc. Heard all of them. They all miss the point. that it drives new players off, and that guarantees the playerbase to decline, which it has. This game still does not provide a way for new players to integrate into the environment in a *balanced* way, as the log shows, and when solutions that could help are floated, they fizzle out.   6. I think what Davairus and the other guy is trying to say, is we welcome you to AR and are here to help with any questions you have. As you know, AR is an RP and PK game. Being thrown in the fire is the best way to learn sometimes, especially in the Abandoned Realms pk world. Ask all the old timers, that's how we learned...whether we wanted to or not. I am sure you will do well with the learning curve of AR, and you'll be a great addition to our community, Tsabnar!
