    2. I think we've all had confine backfire on us. At least those of us with the spine to join a cabal.
      1. Not all of us want to deal with the added stress and commitments being in a cabal entails. Being uncaballed means that if something comes up irl, there are no issues with logging off whenever you need to. On the other hand, people have been dicks towards me in the past and I distinctly recall occasions when I was up far later than I had planned because of somebody invading (the rules regarding cabal conduct are clear regarding intruders: they must be removed). We've also had caballed characters who refused to retrieve a captured item. I distinctly recall somebody who somehow made it into the Hall of Exalted outright refusing to retrieve their item on at least two occasions.

        I wouldn't calling joining a cabal having a spine. I would call it committing yourself.
      2. I typically respect pkers more when they join a cabal bc they have something to defend and are forced to fight 1v2 or 1v3. Uncaballed can literally just avoid that and fight on their own terms every time. To each their own. P nice to have the defenders though.
      3. Agree with Ashlyn and Kalist. Cabal warfare is not so stringent that you have to defend for hours on end, sometimes life intrudes. If you have to log out, you have to log out. It's when it becomes a pattern that it becomes a problem.
      4. The cabal rules were not consistently enforced and there was spam quit-out until we finally set a game rule against doing that, not that I'm saying its fine, but that's what we were seeing, anything to hold onto a tremendous gear advantage.
      5. It has always been my understanding that ignoring an intrusion as a cabal member is unacceptable. I learned this the hard way on my first cabal character many years ago, and I've seen people get slain over this in the past because they logged off just as somebody invaded. The message was clear to me from one particular incident, which happened in Ronus's day... There's *never* an excuse for logging off when you're actively being intruded upon.

        And I've had people continually intrude on me in the past to the point where the problem was only going to be solved by one of us dying. This has caused me several sleepless nights over the years...

        I probably wouldn't have joined Legion even if I'd ranked later than I did, anyway; Legion ganks people now any time and every time if they have the numbers available, and I have been seeking to prove my worth 1-on-1. That's kind of hard to do if I'm gangbanging people all the time, now isn't it?

        Now as in, like, the past year? Now as in, like, the past month? Just wondering because on Aelaldric and Skeggi I don't remember ever fighting 2v1. It might have happened (I don't have a perfect memory) but not enough for me to remember it being prominent or anything.

        The only 2v1 I avidly recall was when Aelaldric and a keeper shadow or monk teamed up against Szrevan 2v1 (not grouped, but talking via tells and both going after him) in which he quit out so fast it made my head spin.

        Besides, if you don't like something about a cabal, you can always join that cabal, rise in the ranks, and make change from within.

        As far as staying to die, that's not my understanding of the current cabal warfare system. My philosophy has been 'if someone invades on me, I MUST go defend and give it my all. I do not have to sacrifice myself. I am not obligated to die just because they have superior gear or numbers. I am absolutely obligated to go attack them, though. I will try to kill them. I will try to draw them away from the cabal. I will try to stop them from capturing the item. Ultimately I may fail, but failure doesn't mean I have to die and get full looted. It might, but it doesn't absolutely have to."

        I've had play sessions before where it's been me against 2. We fight a bunch, they wind up taking item. I kill their thing and get item back. They invade to start it all over again but by that point it's been a couple hours and I have to go. I have no shame quitting out in that scenario and I don't think anyone would fault someone else for doing the same in that scenario. We are all adults now with adult responsibilities, after all.

        That's a narrow view. Couldn't it also mean players whose priority isn't playing AR? Demands of playing a cabal character are elevated for sure.
      2. What demands? Roleplay is required of all characters. The only demands of cabal characters are consistent roleplay. Activity is not even a requirement, but it is expected of the leaders. The only requirement of cabal characters is to adhere to the rules of the cabal and defend the cabal. I would say in order of demand on players would be Justice, Keepers, Warlords, Knights, Legions. There are no Justices or Keepers active out there, there are a few Warlords, a ton of Knights, and a legion or two. The consortium has more demands on them then any cabal, and they are the most active for sure.

        Aside from that, take a look at the players/time played numbers. The non-caballed far exceed the caballed for time played month to month. The correlation of time played to perceived demand is non-existant.

        I may be out on a branch here, but from my years of playing this game I believe the decision not to join a cabal boils down to rule #1. Don't engage in a fight that isn't on your terms. That is something cabal characters are required to do, and sometimes bite it and lose their gear due to it. Dav had it right, "anything to hold onto a tremendous gear advantage." Look at the best equipped characters right now, they definitely aren't in cabals. The highest rated PK'ers are also not in cabals. There is a direct correlation between gear and rating, as well as being in a cabal to rating.

        The game stagnates because people aren't willing to risk dying and losing that sweet gear. It's definitely a lot more interesting when players are in cabals as opposed to not in cabals. Whether you feel that it is an onerous demand or not is a personal decision, but seeing the state of cabals in the game right now and the activity of the uncaballed against the lack of activity of cabals I don't see it being that demanding.

        The elite pkers are elite because they are ultra risk averse. They won't fight without every possible advantage and will avoid fighting when they are disadvantaged. Its boring as hell, and I reserve my right to deride them for their "lack of spine."
      3. Idk I had a p fun time with Skeggi at least. Hard to be risk averse with a fire zerker! Fighting 1v2 or 1v3 a bunch was annoying but doable. I found it better in legion than out due to defenders. Also really great RP opportunity (ie someone in game convinced him to join). You gotta just embrace the RP of your char and see where it takes you. Playing kaelric taught me that sometimes you just gotta say “fuck it” and go balls to the wall, die, and lose all your good stuff. It’s super liberating to realize that you don’t have to clutch your eq right to your chest and avoid death at all costs.
      4. I disagree. I think Kryton willingly enters fights at a disadvantage. He relies on skill to even it out, usually coming out on top.

        I think the lack of cabal activity has more to do with the lack of player base. Cabals and how they're structured (cabal warfare, etc.) made more sense when there was a larger player base. How often do 2v1s or 3v1s even happen against a caballed character? In recent memory it seems like the caballed characters are the ones teaming up. Letya and Szrevan vs Skeggi comes to mind. I believe Savanti and another Knight took down Kryton. Werig, Skeggi, and another Legion took out Bonfo, Dwiggans, and Heathcote after separating them.

        I don't think the right incentives are in place to drive up cabal rosters. Plus there are also plenty of RP reasons for a character not to join a cabal. See Szkrech's background, for example.
      5. I suppose Letya and Szrevan vs Skeggi was a bad example since Skeggi was in Legion.
      6. Mogu has it right. Not only was Legion closed at what would've been a critical time for me, but as I wanted to see what I could do without relying on other people for PvP Legion is still out of the question even if I were offered a position. Militha is a self-reliant character; one of my first two background entries basically summarizes why I won't join Legion.

        Truth is, if it weren't for two constraints (wrong class, the application would've come beyond level 25), Militha could've been a Warlord. I focus primarily on her neutral evil alignment with her RP (basically, she wants to be at the top of the heap and stay there... Though she also likes to exert domination over her opponents), with Strife membership and pledging to Darkhan as secondary influences. Being in Strife means I don't backstab groupies and I don't slaughter naked and weaponless opponents (Terrath found this out recently), whereas the pledging means I openly oppose the Knights.
      7. I have had many cabal characters over the years and the worry about getting ganked does not hinder my decision on whether to join a cabal or not. For me time is always the deciding factor.

    4. If you aren't in a cabal, you get called a coward or spineless...whatever.
      If you are in a cabal and fight for hours, then have to leave.. you get called a coward for leaving.
      I've heard it all...blah blah. I think everybody should stfu.
      Play your cabal or non-caballed character...whatever you chose. Just try to have fun.
