That is because of shield proc'ing more often with lower health, and when it procs while you have an elemental shield, it does some cool stuff. Once it proc'd I'd flee and use pots/scrolls to heal cuz obviously invokers have no way of healing otherwise and then would go back at it while they were still weak.
