Like most gnomes, Gnarble grew up in the gnome village. He was the only
child of two loving and caring parents. The family owned a small shop that
sold all manner of goods - food, linens, clasps, buckles, and minor
curiosities. The first several years of Gnarble's life were quite happy.
He learned and played with the other children. He had a few close friends
and loving parents.
Everything changed around his seventh birthday. His parents started to
notice irregularities in their shop's inventory and balance book. It was
barely noticeable at first - an apple here, a trinket there, but over the
course of a few weeks it became clear that they were being robbed on a
regular basis. They tried everything - they installed mirrors, they posted
signs informing customers that they were being watched, and they spoke to
their friends in the village about their plight and asked that children
always be accompanied by an adult. All this was to no avail, for the
thieving did not relent. By the time Gnarble turned eight, his parents had
lost every copper to their name. The doors were shuttered and they even had
to sell their house to pay their debts.
At first they were able to stay in the village with some family friends.
They spent a few days there trying to make a plan for the future. Gnarble's
parents had decided that they would see if they could find administrative
jobs around the village - perhaps with the mine or the barracks.
Unfortunately they didn't have an opportunity to pursue this path as a
marauding fire giant entered the village and started slaying gnomes with
wild abandon. They were used to such occurrences, of course, as the village
is often attacked, but Gnarble and his parents were caught out in the open.
His parents did the best they could to hide Gnarble in a shrubbery mere
moments before the fire giant cast his wicked gaze upon them. They tried to
flee but it was futile. With a few vicious chops, Gnarble's parents were
left in the dirt, bloodied and maimed. Rather than kill them outright, the
fire giant severed their hands and walked away, laughing as he went.
Gnarble thanked the gods that his parents were alive. They even survived
their wounds, for as soon as the giant left the village, the other gnomes
came out of hiding and came to their aid. It took several months for their
wounds to heal, but with naught but stumps they had little to offer to
reciprocate the charity of their friends. They were considering their next
step when yet again, a group of adventurers wandered into the city and began
hacking gnomes apart for pleasure. Luckily Gnarble and his parents were
able to hide but they decided that they would leave the village and try to
find their way in the wider world.
The gnomish trio made there way to Seringale. They had hoped that either
the Justices or the Priests of the city might be charitable and provide them
with food and shelter. They were quickly faced with the harsh reality that
in Seringale it is every man, woman, and child for themselves. Homeless and
without a means of income, the trio had little option other than to beg for
money. They were able to drink thin soup in the evening in the town soup
kitchen, but were otherwise left to fend for themselves. If they were
lucky, they would beg enough coin to be able to buy some stale bread. Meat
was a scarcity, unless one of them were able to stomp a rat. Gnarble's
parents felt so bad for their son that over time they started giving him
larger portions of their food. By the time Gnarble was ten, his parents
were terribly emaciated. He begged them to eat their full portions, but
they staunchly refused.
Then it happened - the event that the family had been praying for. A
strong, handsome Knight clad in shining full plate armour sitting atop the
back of a magnificent stallion was passing through town. The three gnomes
groveled to the side of his past, begging like their lives depended on it.
He looked down and made eye contact with Gnarble. He saw the desperation in
the young gnome's eyes. A desperation out of love - that needed the coin
not for himself but to sustain his emaciated parents. The Knight was moved
to the point where he reached down and ripped his full coin purse from his
hip, dropping it into Gnarble's small hands. Gnarble sputtered and barely
managed to squeak out a weak 'thank you'. Judging by the weight and with a
quick peek inside, he could tell that there were at least ten thousand coins
within.
This would change EVERYTHING! The gnomes wept with joy and thanked the
Knight continually as he continued on his way. They started to make their
way from the South Square to the bank, to set up an account but
unfortunately news of their bounty spread fast. South of the Market Square,
they were beset by thieves. They killed Gnarble's parents, beat him
severely, and left with the coin. Gnarble had felt the best moment of his
life, quickly followed by the worst.
Gnarble made a vow then and there that he would gain vengeance for his
parents. He would learn the ways of a thief - not so he could be a thief,
but so he could kill thieves. He would find them, and he would kill them.
He cares not for good or evil or law or chaos. His task is singular. He
would never let what happened to his family, throughout his life, happen to
others. Not if he had anything to say about it.
Description:
The gnome that you see before you has the same height and build of a
typical gnome, but his facial features appear more human than one would
expect. Rather than bushy eyebrows and a garish nose, he has thin eyebrows
and a normal nose. His green eyes twinkle as he takes in his surroundings.
His face is clean-shaven and his thin lips are pulled back in an easy smile.
He has a sharp chin and high cheekbones, giving him a somewhat handsome
appearance. He has short, wavy blonde hair that is casually parted in the
middle. Rather than a gnome, he looks more like an adult human male that
has either failed to grow to appropriate size or who has been shrunken by
some spell. Perhaps it is not a gnome at all. Perhaps it is some sort of
elaborate disguise.
Made this char after dav was saying how OP gnome thieves were. Totally had huge hp. Sidestep/uncanny/clobber nerfed the minute after I killed a mino zerker with sidestep. lol
Favorite memory: kicking Szrevan's ass in the arena bc he wasn't prepared. Bring more food next time bro.

"Playing at work"... If I tried that I'd probably get fired!
Overhead has its windup to cause people to think twice before using, and sidestep actually has a lot in common with overhead, because its recovery time is almost enough for the other player to switch/dirt/hobble before you can do anything again. I didn't nerf sidestep anything to do with that character. That character was of no consequence. congrats on starving someone to death in a duel
