For those persons just beginning to learn how to roleplay there are a few
simple rules to get you by without insults from players and risk of breaking
RP rules. These are the prime rules to follow as far as roleplay goes:
1) Be one with your character
Human dark-knights wandering around Serin looking for blood don't just get
up off their seat to go to restroom. The person behind the character might
do that, but the dark-knight NEVER acts like he has knowledge of it.
If you go AFK, just stop doing anything and leave. Some people say "My mind
will wander" but not only is this semi-poor RP, you just told people you are AFK
and might get PKed by them. So just don't say anything.
2) Don't overdo it too much
Very experienced roleplayers quite often bother to add a dialect to their speech,
while this is very impressive when done correctly, its not recommended to try
if you really don't have a clue. You will be making a fool of yourself if you
try to do that with your first ever character, because eventually you will realise
it is too hard to keep it up. So keep it easy on yourself, and don't get
stressed out about it.
3) NEVER EVER change your roleplay!
If you start a character off acting as inherently dumb he isn't going to
suddenly become a genius. You COULD roleplay your way through it with
enough effort but why? Might as well make a new character. The point of
roleplay is to have fun and expending a LOT of effort into it will make it
BORING to do. Before you think about creating a character, think forward to
what you want to do with it at level 50. Do you want him to be intelligent?
Play a drow. There's nothing wrong with playing cookie cutter roleplay classes
when you are first starting out. Matter of fact, thats why we have so many
different races and classes to choose from in the first place.
This is a basic list of terms you should never use:
You say 'afk'
You say 'Soandso is in my PK.' <-- yes people have PK flags by their name. No
we don't mention them with our characters. At the very least you can say that
they are simply in your range, if nothing more eloquent comes to mind. A lot
of people do this already.
You say 'How much tnl?'
Any abbreviations like "str" or "wis" in the game. Type the whole word out!
Numerical stats, like saying you have 24 strength. Best not mention your numerical
stats at all, instead refer to it as giant, genius, etc..
Your max hp, Hitrolls and Damrolls. Bad RP, and NOT information you want to give out.
It puts you at a disadvantage in combat.
Do not use "bowdlerized" language to convey OOC terms like what level you are,
that you're waiting for the area to repop, that you're going AFK, etc. This
completely ruins immersion for everybody around you. If you do this in a heavy
roleplaying area, such as in North Square when people are talking, expect to
be smited by an Immortal.
Examples of bowdlerized language:
"It has 5 layers on it", "I will reach pinnacle shortly", "My mind wanders"
Everybody knows exactly what you mean when you say things like this and it is
STRONGLY discouraged in a roleplaying context. It's OK to convey these ideas
when necessary, but DO NOT do it in the middle of an in-character conversation.
ESPECIALLY do not do it in a tell immediately after being PKed to your attacker.
