1. Introduction

Cabals are groups dedicated to a common cause. There are four major cabals in existence, all based in or near a unique hometown. Each cabal's goal is to bring stability to the game. Each cabal has a different means of accomplishing this end. This brings cabals into conflict, and bloodshed is certain.

2. Cabals

The four cabals in existence are as follows:

KNIGHT - Knights of Valour
LEGION - Legion of Darkness
JUSTICE - Upholders of Law
WARLORD - Masters of Battle

2i. Cabal goals

Cabals have different "means" to meet their "ends":

Knight - stability via noble eradication of murderers to create peaceful land
Legion - stability via ruthless subjugation (all unprotected are enemies)
Justice - stability via authorative deterrence (laws must be obeyed, criminals are punished)
Warlord - voluntary stability (warlords are opposed to those who "rule" others)

These means are related to the forms of government that are employed with their associated towns:

Valour - rule of one (monarchy)
Legion - rule of one (tyranny)
Justice - rule of law (even the law enforcers are held accountable)
Timaran - voluntary social co-operation

2ii. Joining cabals

For further information about cabals or joining them please speak to the cabal immortals or a member of that cabal.

To become a member of a cabal you must demonstrate that your goal is common to their goal, and also that you possess some of the four qualities they are looking for in members. The four qualities each cabal search for are as follows: a tough skin, a healthy attendance, the right attitude, being skilled at what you do. Each cabal specifically demands one of these qualities in return for giving you the opportunity/help to develop the other.

Knights - right attitude demanded, tough skin developable
Legion - tough skin demanded, right attitude developable
Justice - healthy attendance demanded, fighting skill developable
Warlord - fighting skill demanded, attendance developable

All cabals have different methods of inducting members. For example, as a Knight, you MUST be squired first after rank 20, and when your name is renown as a champion of good you will have earned your place in Knights (induction will occur post 35). Legion operates more of a revolving door policy.

You cannot simply join ANY cabal - just like the guilds only allow certain alignments and races, so too do the cabals only allow certain alignments and classes.

Remember, you have joined a cabal because THEIR cause was the same as your cause. Once inducted, your cause becomes "to help the cabal achieve their cause". Failure to uphold the beliefs of your cabal is grounds for uninduction.

2iii. Cabal items

Each cabal has an item which gives them their unique cabal powers, located in their hideout. Taking the item and putting it in your own altar will drain the powers of that cabal. Expect a cabal's members to do everything they can to stop you from taking that item. Once drained, that ENTIRE cabal's powers stay severed until the item has been placed back in its home altar. So you're expected to do everything you can to prevent that.

Confinement may be used in defence of your cabal, use it to ensure the guardian survives longer than you do.
Surveillance is used to spy on cabals whose item you have captured.

2iv. Cabal flags

Each cabal has a form of flag that marks a person for certain death at the hands of that cabal. The way this is earned depends upon the cabal.

OUTLAW - administred by nobles only, for crimes against Valour
CONTRACT - paid in Darkhaven, this puts a Legion bounty on someones head
WANTED - used by Justice to mark criminals who break laws of Seringale
DEATHMARK - used by Warlords

2v. Cabal ranks

Every cabal has a hierarchy that spells out the politics of the cabal. You begin at the bottom of the cabal ladder. Promotions are generally given for going beyond the call of duty, and rising above the expectations of that cabal. Demotions are given for things like failing to defend your cabal grounds, and losing the item without dying in the process. It is a long road from the first rank of the cabal to its helm.

3. Subordinates

Subordinates are uncaballed characters that share a close link to the mother cabal. These do not need to worry about the cabal item fighting, but neither will they gain majorly special powers. In some cases, it may be possible to become a subordinate of multiple cabals.

The four subordinates in existence are as follows:

Nobles - pacifistic exalteds of Valour, responsible for outlawing criminals
Protected - spies who have paid for the protection of Legion
TBA - (Justice subordinate)
Heralds - scribers of history, defended by the Warlords

3i. Joining a subordinate

Noble - apply to Knight
Protected - buy it at Vinnie in Darkhaven
TBA
Herald - apply to Herald (Heralds are the most fleshed out of subordinates)

Cabals and subordinates have unique skills that interact with each other - for example "Protected" are able to eavesdrop for the leader of Legion, while Legion can "extort" items from protected. Knights are allowed to "guard" nobles from attacks, while nobles are allowed to place "outlaw" flags to mark people who have misbehaved in Valour, for the Knights to later deal with. You do not need to be skilled at fighting at all to be a subordinate.

Updates:

Because we've been changing entrance requirements, the occasional person is going to find themselves kicked or find their application was a waste of time.

If you've been kicked because of an ENTRANCE REQUIREMENT change, you won't lose skills, and as far as I am concerned you can go about your business, find something new. I might have liked to just let the current ones die off as we've done with previous cabal chars, but that's not something that has worked well in practice. & its just plain mean to boot people de facto. The precedent for this has now been set.

If you've APPLIED, but not yet got in, then you get the rougher end of the stick. You must pay for your hometown change, you must seek out any needed alignment/ethos change, no freebies for those that weren't actually in cabals. The precedent for this has also already been set.

Note that this stuff applies ONLY to entrance requirement changes causing disqualifications. Which we rarely do.

In addition to that, if you want to go for a subordinate, despite being caballed before, thats ok. As with applicants, you must take care of any hometown/align/ethos changes through the usual means. This precedent has not yet been made.
