Okay so.. I'm not here to tell you what to play, if you're reading here you already decided. What I wanted to give was some input into what happens when you throw certain things at cabals. Consider it just suggestion.

1) Cabal defence

this is one of the most important thing going on, it determines your success as a cabal character to a great degree. Does your char have to be good at killing other players? No.. but there is a rule for cabal characters, come back and defend immediately. This makes some classes a rather bad idea -

Necro: okay, so you want to play a class that has to spend an hour getting zombies, with any raid interrupting you. Good luck. If you make it youre ok.
Illusionist: this is worse than necro because you will have to get dupes before you show up, which is about 2 minutes of spelling and gating, which means your guardian is down before you get there
Thief: this gets "pwned" by cabal adrenaline ruining stealth & puts it into a fight that isnt on the thief's terms, terrible idea

Anything with dispel magic, or lag skills can defend extremely well in even numbers. When the odds are against you, its the warrior and cleric classes that do best (things like reflex mode & running off to do some healing)

2) Offense

Important! Look at the problems above. Now, what do you have to make up for that. Can you retrieve from other cabals really quickly? (Illusionist, Ranger) Can you tank the guardians? Can you do some sortof healing. Again, thieves blow here, the dual backstab attack may be wonderful against players with about 800 hp, but they struggle to tank huge hp mobs. Put a warrior in to tank for them, and it suddenly gets a lot better.

So please.. just think about that stuff before you apply. People try for cabals frequently with things like drow shamans, thieves, ninjas, etc, which can certainly do well in the right setting (very dependent on current player trends) ... not going to be very fun to insert into a fairly dead/outnumbered cabal. Use http://abandonedrealms.com/players to check out how things are looking, consider the way you play the game e.g. plays a lot, active / spends time on solo = essential class such as warrior/healer, doesnt play much = flavour class for an active cabal, or just dont bother joining, as you'll be better off independent.
