For skills like, parry, shield block, counter and so one. Things that are automatic, I was thinking about a way to stop doing those things. Primarily this would be for training, but I suppose a way could be found to use them during pk to rope-a-dope someone.

Certain skills should remain always on, fast healing, meditation, trance and things like that. But for things like shield block, why wouldn't you be able to just stop blocking with a shield? Maybe a certain amount of reflex, but given that it isn't that difficult to just stop trying to parry someones attacks, I don't see why we can't create a way to force a character to stop doing those things.

I've often wanted to be able to turn off counter. Good idea.

Counter is actually the only skill I don't like that's automatic. It feels like you can control the others (remove shield, wear whip, get some -dex items), and the fact that it drains mana makes me Sad.

I have a hard time imagining a skilled fighter letting someone hit him because he doesn't want to parry (for training). It seems like it's automatic for a reason.

If a martial artist, say a black belt or something, trained young martial artists by being on 'automatic', there'd be a lot of messed up looking kids wandering around due to all of the full force kicks to the head those five year olds would be subjected to. Wink

Automatic skills make sense, if you train something for a lifetime, it becomes a reflex. Means you do not control it with your mind but your backbone nerves. You simply don't stop parrying because it is a reflex to put your hand against the incoming blow.

Quick guide to training defensive skills.

Parry - use a weapon, work up parry.

Shield Block - No weapon + shield = work up shield block

Dodge (as most warrior classes get this around 30s) - No weapon, no shield = work up dodge.

The problem people run into is they master dodge before mastering parry and shield block and they want to save the two hours of hobgoblin dummy training they do because they dodge some of those attacks with a mastered skill instead of a skill they want to train. Boo hoo.

Oh, they could, I don't know, not practice it until they trained it?

Lol. The idea spawned from training, but why is it not feasible? Simply because "You do it right all the time, why can't everyone else?" Give me a break.

Fyi. Grab a buddy, have him punch in you the mush and don't raise your hands. You're face will hurt and your buddies hand will hurt, but you will find you are ABSOLUTELY capable of not blocking his incoming attack. This is called conscious control. And yes, it absolutely can override your reflexes. Point of fact, those reflexes can be unlearned and reshaped as required. Brains are so cool.

At that point, you're fighting natural instinct.

You can keep your hand down for the first couple of blows, but as soon as the pain kicks in, your natural instict/reflex is to block the next attack.

You are coded to avoid pain as pain is indicator of something being wrong.

Try to stick your hand in the oven and hold it there with your brain.

Which isn't the same thing as saying, "Okay, I'm not going to block with my weapon and only with my shield in order to better understand how to utilize it." Especially during a training situation, this would not only be entirely feasible but also how a typical person would act.

Had a warrior I didn't even bother learning parry until dual parry was mastered, it wasn't too bad only having shield block that took all of 20 minutes to master. After dual parry was taken care of, knocked out parry, then dodge. I'm really not seeing why you're wanting to be able to stop using a defense automatically

This isn't even an issue with the current state of training. A giant can master dual parry in less than an hour with all of the others practiced.

Cracks me up that everyone went straight to defenses. Personally, it could be useful for that, but that's not what I had intended training with this could be.

Not very original all.
