So, I'm looking through some items on the codex and I stumbled upon a couple of flags.
What does it mean when an item is rare?
What does it mean when an item is unique?
I seem to remember, that the mud I used to play, had limited items.
So an item could be limited to 2 which meant only 2 could ever exist in the game.
Do you also have limited items? Is that what unique means? Only one can exist? Or I can only wear one? |

Rares and uniques have limited circulation within the game. There is only ever one of a unique item in the game at a time so if a player has it and you want it, he either has to give it to you or you have to kill him. Rares are also limited but their number depends on how powerful the item is and other factors that I'm not 100% sure of ( rumor has it some of them are tied to the player base, higher the player base, more rates in circulation).
You need to log a certain number of hours per month to keep your rates and uniques as well otherwise they poof and you log back on naked at the first of the new month. |

LIMITED RARE UNIQUE
Here at the Abandoned Realms, certain equipment are restricted in numbers.
These equipment are known as "limited" equipment. You can tell whether an
item is limited or not by using the lore skill or the identify spell.
Limited equipment will be denoted by "Rare item" or "Unique item." As a
rule, unique items are fewer in numbers than rare items, and thus harder
to find. Unique items are not necessarily "unique", as there can be more
than one "unique" item in the game.
There are a few special rules with limited items:
- Limited items cannot be put in containers of any kind.
- Players below level 15 will lose all limited equipment when they quit.
- You are permitted to wear as many limited equipment as you can find
unless you are below level 30. You may be suspected of multi-playing
and/or being a "storage character" if you have more limited equipment
than is reasonable for someone below level 30. It is entirely up to
the discretion of the gods as to what is reasonable. If you have any
doubts about whether you have too many limited items, you should level
past level 30 so that there will be no trouble.
- You will only keep a limited number of items in your inventory when you
quit. This number follows the formula (level/10 - 1), rounded down.
Thus, if you're level 45, you can safely keep 3 limited items in your
inventory through logouts and reboots. Lost limited items are not
reimbursed.
- You are required to play a certain number of hours every month if you
want to keep the limited equipment on your character. If you have less
than the required number of hours in a particular month, you will lose
all the limited equipment your character is wearing and also in the
inventory. Do not bother asking about how many hours this is, as this
information is restricted to the Implementors.
- Sometimes when a player dies, if there are more limited items than the
limit set for their item, that item will disappear. This is known as
the item in question being "overmaxed." Equipment overmaxing occurs
due to natural fluctuations in the player base, as well as other mud-
related factors. No compensation will be given for an item that is
overmaxed, whether it was from your corpse or the corpse of someone
you've killed. Asking for it will only cause problems for you before
you are referred to this file.
Remember that limited items are a privilege, not a right. Abusing the
system through means such as multi-playing, duping, and OOC equipment
transfers are all subject to severe punishments, both character- and
site-based.

There can be more than 1 unique item they just appear in less quantities than rare items. |

I didn't even think to check the help file.
Thank you, that is very useful.
I guess it makes little sense for my low level character, to start looking for these items already.
But if some of my items disappear when I logout, at least now I'll know that could be due to rare item limitations. |

One danger of having a low-leveled toon toting around a pimp suit of rares is that you become a target. People will just slaughter you to get that shiny shit. |

That is also why I just wear decent PvE eq and avoid best eq pieces at all costs. |
