does any one else think that holes or pits with no way out are an unnessesary part of the game? really..i mean come on people

First of all, they require that you go prepared when you travel, or know how to ask in character for help... They are great game objects to base a little RP off of, and are great ways for shamans with summon to make a little money if they play at odd times.

You forgot doors that you can misty potion through but are locked and cursed! As for their utility in the game, I don't think that they're too bad because there are ways out. As cleaning_ninja said, you should always carry a recall or two, and there's always making friendships by asking for help when you're stuck. My personal favorite, however, is to carry a charm of knowledge from the mud school - it hums when you're about to fall into a trap. Heck, even my level 50 character still has her charm of knowledge! Wink

Personally I always thought they were silly. Along with only having keys on one side of a door.

they provide another dimension in pk fights when people use strategies to trap their enemies in these rooms. there are only a few in the entire realms so i don't see why its so bad, especially when lesser recalls are so cheap and anyone under lvl 10 can just type recall.

And some are quests which slightly increase your ability to practice your skills, like Mahatma's Inescapable Trap. Which I fell into after killing an ethereal spider with my elf paladin. I didn't realize that it was a good mob. So I sat there, spellless, unable to recall, and being constantly awoken by Mahatma stabbing me. But it wasn't really that annoying or inconvenient.
