Progress on Combat Module B was put on hold for a bit while we ran into a few coding complications and while I had to do some traveling, but now we're back in the saddle again. I'll start off this round of changes with just a tidbit to whet your appetite: the stats for all the weapon classes have changed to make them ALL roughly equally useful. Before these changes, maces were basically uber and daggers and spears were basically gimped, but now that's a thing of the past. You'll need to shift your thinking now and discard the old ideas about how "good" a certain class of weapon is, and instead consider whether it's the right weapon type (blade/shaft/segment) and the right offense/defense mix for the battle you want to conduct.

Here's a quick chart to get you started:
Code:

             PRIMARY          OFFHAND

           off     def      off     def
    axe | ****  | **    || ****  | *     |
 dagger | **    | **    || ***   | ****  |
 exotic | ****  | **    || ****  | **    |
  flail | ***** | **    || ***** | *     |
   mace | **    | ****  || **    | ***   |
  spear | **    | ****  || **    | ****  |
  sword | ****  | ***   || ***   | **    |
   whip | ***** | *     || ***** | *     |
    bow | ***** | **    |
polearm | ****  | ****  |
  staff | ***   | ***** |

 *     = very low
 **    = low
 ***   = average
 ****  = high
 ***** = very high

This is simply the help file header info represented in chart form -- the tidbits mentioned in the help files have more info and are still more precise in their details. So before you start waving your hand saying "how come the help file says maces are a good primary weapon but according to the chart it's only as good as a spear" or "how come flails are as good as bows even though bows are two handed" or even "how come X weapon has more stars than Y weapon", you need to realize that the above chart an illustration of what each weapon is useful for and not a comparison of how strong they are against each other. Just like there can be a big difference between one MANGLE and another, likewise one weapon's two-star attack rating isn't identical to another weapon's two-star attack rating. In fact, no two weapons have identical primary weapon stats or offhand weapon stats, despite the star ratings making it appear as if they do. The actual ratings totals for ALL the weapons are within 5% of each other, so I do really mean it when I say that all weapons are roughly equally strong. Remember, I have the actual numbers in front of me, and the chart is just a crude interpretation of it for your benefit.

Again, there are a few interesting tidbits in the helpfiles that aren't covered by this chart, so be sure to read through them when you have the time.

A few observations:

* Two-handed weapons beat one-handed weapons pretty soundly in a pure matchup. This means that even though, for example, you'll receive the same doubled enhanced damage bonus from using a two-handed sword as you will with a polearm, if you're going to be using a two-handed weapon, you might as well just use the polearm.
* Polearm and staff are equally powerful. Bow is weaker than the other two-handed weapons but stronger than the one-handed weapons.
* The best overall one-handed primary weapons are flail, mace, and sword. They're identically powerful, it just depends on what mix of offense versus defense you want.
* The best overall offhand weapon IF you have dual parry is dagger.
* The best one-handed attacking weapons are whip, flail, and axe, in that order. This is for both primary and offhand. If you do NOT have dual parry, these are also your best overall offhand weapons.
* The best one-handed parry weapons are mace then spear.
* The best dual parry weapons are dagger then spear.

The skills affected by these weapon ratings are parry and dual parry. There are some penalties involved for dodge (for spears) and shield block (for axes) as well.
