PostPosted: Fri Dec 02, 2005 6:29 am    Post subject: Important Consumables

I hate collecting things, but you gotta make the most of your abilities, aye? Here are some of my most commonly used consumables. Please fill in whatever you think are no brainer useful things to go collect. They can be easy to get, rares, etc, as long as they are reasonable to collect and use consistently (if something costs like 40k, thats not realistic). I'm looking to make sure I'm not missing out on other easy things to collect, or things that are simply just worth the cost and should be used frequently.

WANDS-

EDIBLES-

spotted purple pill (Seringale) - teleport
magic dust (Elemental Canyon) - detect invis
three-eyed root (Witch Wood) - detect invis, something else

SCROLLS-

scroll of jhyfrdow (Arunucus) - protection
scroll of flying (Seringale, 2k) - flight
?? scroll (Thalos, in locked desk) - detect invis
?? scroll (holy draconian) - armor
energy scroll (large elemental, Elemental Canyon) - cure critical
tattered scroll (desk in Thalos, mimic) - enchant weapon

POTIONS

amber potion (nanny, day care) - armor
purple potion (large hobgoblin. Moira) (zombie, Battlezone) - sanctuary, cure blind
flask of blood (Keep of Da Al Kadar whatever) - sanctuary
gyvel potion (Arunucus) - cure blind
magenta potion (holy draconian) - protection
various flavors of recall (Seringale) - recall
potions of monster resistance/repulsion (Timaran) - sanc against mobs

STAVES

red dragonorb (red dragon, sewers) - sanctuary

What big ones am I missing? Particularly staves, wands. Curious to see what other big ones I need to know about though too.

Heart of the nymph (edible, Emerald) is a pretty big omission.. that's in the emerald forest quest to help people find it. Also I suggest thoroughly exploring the high tower of sorcery.

Good players don't need to hide information or keep this kind of advantage over others. They should want others to get better, welcome the challenge, and continue to win -- because the competition makes them better too (and the wins more rewarding and fun).

Then Dav, my friend, is an asshole Wink .
Especially if its somehow related to that invincibility or whatever item it is that makes you scream the power and then die.

Any bigtime healing staves or wands anyone?

Rares, whatever, as long as its definitely worth the time to get it.

I'd add wisp potion (mist area near ogre village) for a low/med strength cure critical, and bird of paradise flower (escimir) for detect invis + mass invis.

This is a whole list I have compiled here, from diff. AR community sites and experience, of common goods I have found useful in ermegencies or useful to carry, it's old so it may be off in someplaces, and I have full idents/levels of spells on them if anyone wants them too. Some are useful for lower levels, and some higher.

---Potions---
1. a dark red potion

3. a misty potion
pass door, faerie fire (a swirling mist, dwarven catacombs)

4. a clear potion
detect evil, detect invis, detect magic (Shudde-M'ell, South of Ofcol)

5. a magenta potion
cure critical, protection (Holy Draconian, Dragon Tower)

6. DELETED BY MOD

3. a bird of paradise flower

5. All kinds of thing from Ella in Valour:
a bunch of bananas-cure blindness, a pear-cure poison, an orange- refresh, a lemon-cure disease, a magical red apple-infravison

6. the Golden Flower of the Jungle

7. Some of these from Rildan are useful:
a green, rectangular pill-infravison, a pill as black as ebony- change sex, cure light (more fun than useful), a large crimson pill-refresh, a blue pill with yellow spots-cure serious, cure disease, cure poison, refresh

A slight note, I left out wands because in all honesty most things can be achieved by pills, potions, scrolls or staves if need be, without wands. never had much occasion to use them.

Erm, I never replied here? Sorry.

Reliable and easy to obtain cure items are very useful for classes that can't defend or regen too well. Bad tanking combined with shit regen is an intended limitation for those kind of classes, because they have some tight offensive perks to make up for it. Examples of those classes are:

* invokers (even uses tendrils to gain mana for hp regularly)
* thieves (just has a crap hp and no cure spells, but hey, go dual backstab someone and see why)
* a raged berserker is also shit-regen'd

With the heart of the nymph being diesel otherwise, not having detrimental affects dramatically changes the playability of these classes - literally, you'd be able to Rambo and spam 'eat' to cure up in seconds, since pills have no volume. The idea is you carry and eat enough hearts for the problems the first heart causes to be worthwhile. Drawbacks are commonly found on things that are *really* good, like the behaviour ruby-hilted dagger for example.

BTW, rares information does not belong here, so I removed it from the post. The other stuff I don't mind.

Perfectly acceptable, although most of the staves you deleted I didn't have down as rare, but then again it has been a while since I updated that thing. Hope it helps you out Slade.

Personaly I only carry around purple potions and protection potions. I load up on enough saves to not have to worry about blind and if I do get blind I know my way around enough to run my balls off to anywhere.

A couple that I think are cool.

A blue scroll - Highest level scroll of enchant you can get

A tattered scroll (or something) - Enchant scroll. Kill the mayor of new thalos and unlock his desk. Three scrolls sitting in there. One of them is the medium enchant scroll.

And then the scroll in old thalos. Kill the south west golem and take the key thing. Desk is in the same spot.

Red dragon orb - can sanc up Warlords. Some necro did it to me one time. It was cool.

Magenta - cool as hell. This is actualy Protection. Jyfrdow is only a minor version (I think)

bones of the bat - found on warlords corpses cures blind.

I dunno. Im tired. That orb needs to be fixed thoh dav.

Yeah, Lourn had like 70 nymph hearts in his portable hole when I pried it off him in front of 3 justices, back when it did cure critical. Nymph hearts now are just useless though. Kids, dont bother with them. Referring to crazyhorse's post about magenta's and scrolls of protection from Aruncus...there are no minor or major forms of protection. There is one form, the only difference being duration. Oh, for low levels, the extract from Molin in Solace is handy, sometimes you can find 30 or 40 of them just lying there from groups going through, they do cure light and refresh and cure poison. Handy when 8hp is a lot, and easy to get since you can get to Timaran from the mudschool and boot it out to Solace. As far as editing out information on rares, the only ones who don't know are newbies, so they're the ones suffering, thus people who've been playing longer just have another edge. But whatever.

Actually, nymph hearts cure exactly as much as they used to (low level cure crit vs extremely high level cure light that restores exactly the same hp, on average). Because of the additional spells that are on the hearts though, they're only worthwhile to eat if you're eating multiple hearts at once (since the additional spells are only applied for the first heart), which is the price that's paid for the hearts being easily used and stockpiled (i.e. they don't require the scroll/stave skills and don't evaporate over time like potions do). Besides, you'd expect that there'd be some drawbacks to stealing from altars, right?

Why do I keep hearing so much about purple potions? Why are they so important? I was talking to an immortal. He told me the best way to get them was to cast summon on a large hobgoblin. How else can I get them?

Purples keep you alive. When you quaff it, it gives you sanctuary which cuts the damage you recieve in HALF (pretty sure). This means that you can take twice as much damage in a fight. It only lasts for a few hours, so you'll want to keep a large amount of them in your inventory/sack. Basically, if you don't have them while Pking, you die.

That is the best way, but if you can't summon, you'll just go to the hogoblins on foot.
