I use this template frequently, though I don't apply often at all. This is kinda a standard one to impress.

note to <cabal>
note subject <Blah's application>

Dear <Brethren/Sirs/Lords/Wreched Ones/.... interesting title helps>,

Paragraph 1:
<I come from _____, bearing the name of _____ OR I am _____, with the intention to join your halls as _____blahblah_____ and this is because _____blahblah_____. I have seen _____ around in my _____ .... inspire yourself from here on, keep it neat.>

Paragraph 2:
- This has been what happened to me recently, with _____referencing your background_____.
- That _____insert event with references to background_____ has <inspired/caused/led/made> me _____insert sucking up words_____ your halls, to _____fight together or kill together whatever up to you_____.

Paragraph 3:
- You may ask why do you need me in _____insert cabal_____.
- I have proved myself in combat _____insert some past poweresses to impress_____.
- I will continue doing what I have always done which is to _____insert action you have done and impress more_____
- I shall not fail you in any way and I am willing to bear all repercussions and hardships that may befall me, regardless.
- What am I, afterall, being forced to go through _____insert self deprecating words_____ blahblah.

Paragraph 4:
- Ending note writes here:
- I have been waiting _____whatever length of time of your life_____ ever since the _____aforementioned events happened_____ that made me take this path in life.
- I shall await eagerly for any word in return, and I will thoroughly and completely fufil whatever challenges that is beset of me.

Sign off blah.

I'll agree with Sethronu here. Most important to me is name, rank, race, class.

Its really difficult how to tell you what to write on an application since ideally we don't want to read the same thing from everyone. Instead, I can tell you what I dislike about applications that I do read:

- Don't make it too long. By sending an application, I already know you want to apply, I can read your background and description for insight as to where you came from and what you look like. Just stick to the basics and you shouldn't need more than 1, maybe 2 paragraphs to explain it.
- Use APPLICATION and not NOTE. There is a difference, and you'd be surprised how many people still use note.
- Use a spell checker. Its really annoying to have to fight through someone's application when reading it. More often than not I'll give up after a few sentences if you have egregious errors.
- Use the .f feature in the note editor. Presentation is the first thing I see.

Lastly, be original. You're not going to get negative points for being the big giant who's stupid, or the slith who speaks with all ssssss's, but you'll definately get points for original RP. Put those writing skills to good use. If you read your own application and love it, then chances are we will too. If you read it and think "meh, its enough" then thats exactly what we'll think also.

Some of us are old school and have using note heavily ingrained.

I also don't like to long of applications myself. Pretty much feel the same way as Ronus and Sethronu.. if you just use help <cabal> put in it what it tells you to. Appearance is a must for me, doesn't have to be all spelled right cuz I can't spell worth a damn myself but make sure it formated and looks nice.

<sarcasm>Well, having written some amazing applications myself</sarcasm> i shall dispose few gems of wisdom.

Do not fear short applications. Try to keep it to the point. Unless you have an elaborate idea... you don't need it. Cabal leaders and cabal members don't really relish reading inflated noninventive applications. Usually when I read applications if you didn't catch my attention in first five lines and rest had more then half lines, some cabal underling had to read it and shorten it for me Smile. You don't want to opress your future cabal mates.

Seriously, you do not need amazing application to be considered for cabal. It can help to some extent, but I'll stress again unless you don't have a spiffy idea don't force it. Result will be less then satisfying to you and well a tedious homework to those who will have to read it.

Also, if you are giant, keep it dumb, they are not scribes... if you are halfer make it playful, if you are gnome make it funny.

Nice pointers from marsd here on form, work around it. And definitively pay heed to Ronus and Sethronu, after all its from the "horses mouth".

In my newb days I wrote 2 pages + apps, today I stick to 8-10 lines, though I'm still a newb.

In my personal oppinion you should ignore this statement. Your background and the RP that you choose should tell if your fire giant is a retard or a scribe. Be inventive. Not cookie cutter. (Cookie cutter is ok, but dont make it cookie cutter, if that makes any sense.)

Ehh, you should roleplay your int/wis just like the game forces you to "play" your strength/dex whether you like it or not. You can't be a unique elf that's as powerful as giants. It just doesn't work like that. Its their physiology. If you dont make any effort to roleplay it then its just humans in funny suits. Clever fire giant just doesnt work either. Now you can be a 15 int scribe and you get to decide exactly how bad their writing needs to be, but there's no question that they are in fact extremely dumb.

Gnome being funny isnt in the physiology so I'm not responding to that part of the "this should all be ignored" stuff.
