Umm. I just wanted to clear something up, because I've never quite understood:

Giants have a vuln to mental damage. However, quite a few times I've been told "if you don't have mental, use magical". Now, are they particularly vulnerable to 'magical' attacks, or is it just that they will take 'normal' damage from them (thus bypassing resistances from giant-skin?)

While we're on the topic, and I'm asking stupid questions: are fire giants at all resistant to fire, Storms to water, stone giants to...umm...stone? - on second thoughts, nevermind about this one.

In my experience, I have noticed giants are a little more hurt by magic.

giants are vuln to mental (phantasmal griffon, dreams, and spells like summon, dispel magic, etc)

magic damage hurts everyone more than usual (flaming bite over say slash) because of lower ac (ac doesnt count that much but it counts a little bit). if you check a giant, his magic ac will be even lower than the average guy.

giants also have resistance to physical damage, so you definitely want to use magical damage to bypass that.

spells like lightning bolt are just afflictive spells that hurt them like everyone else. usually giants will have less afflictive saves than others since they go for hit/dam. they have the hp to make up for some of that damage though.

only guys that get hurt less by magic are those with magic resistances like halflings or dwarves/duergars. the converse isnt true (they arent vuln physical), but dwarves/duergs are vuln water and halflings are buff (but vuln to the damage off the "bash" skill, i think because of a size penalty to the victim in that skill). mental damage hurt halflings/dwarves/duergs less, and also people with a lot of saves against mental.

fire giants are resistant to fire damage. storms however are not resistant to water i believe. storms are vuln to wooden projectiles. stones are not resistant to anything besides physcal damage like slash/bashing.

AC issues aside (giants almost always have terrible AC owing to their low dex), giants take exactly as much damage from non-mental magic as any other non-magic-resistant race. Fire giants are resistant to fire and vulnerable to ice, and storm giants are resistant to lightning and vulnerable to wood.
