I remember this being brought up before. Using more colors liberally decreases how 'special' the things are that already use different colors. Keep in mind you can already customize your colors with your mud client (if it doesn't suck).

Depends on what you mean by "more colors". If people want to play it gray, I see no reason to interfere with that. If by "more colors" you mean some sort of configurable color system, count me in.

I spent my first 3 months or so of playing AR idling in my guildhall writing color triggers, and that was after being emailed 50 or so from a friend of mine who had played before.

It looks like I have 249 different generic color triggers, not counting stuff like my highlights for cabals/heralds.

I'd say the default color scheme is fairly nauseating, personally, (It literally made me nauseous to play it for more than 30-45 minutes), and it's been a turnoff to a lot of people I've tried to convince to play.

This sounds like a problem. Please post a more detailed gripe. I've recoded the colors in AR a lot so its easy for me to change default scheme, add options, etc. Shit, I could let you customize it to your hearts content too if you wanted. Let me know precisely what you're looking for, and we'll see what we can come up with.

What would be excellent is if players could personally color code via in game commands.

For example typing "color roomnames green" wouldmake all room colors default color green or "color exits red" would make the exit line([Exits: north]) red. This give players the choice to color code if they want, or leave it simple if they want.

A few customizables you could start off with: Roomdesc, roomname, exits, emotes, says, channels, walks out and walks in.

if it isn't too difficult I would suggest a few schemes for dark background users, then a few more for those light background users. I don't know about anyone, but I personally use a very custom shade of grey, which is so faint it looks almost white but still having the grey tint. Stark contrasts hurts the eyes very much. I have my zMud configured so that the black isn't a pure shade of black for the text too.

Which brings me to another point, for those rare people who use light background... some colours default in mud are just... ow Razz for example - says.

So you want...

* less colour to start (i.e. completely off?)
* less colour after turning it on?
* more options
* customization of the optional colours

I've got most of my colors they way I want them now, via triggers, so I can't complain too much. It was annoying making them, though. I think Erlwith has the idea. I'll just post a list of things I have colorcoded.

Where (mainly the message: Players near you:)
Who (at least the racial side of it)
dodge/parry/shieldblock messages
skill messages (dodges your attack, dirt kick, same as above, I guess)
spell wearoffs (You can raise the dead again (I never get tired of that
-----message, by the way))
Identify output (I have it color coded with two different colors, lightblue
-----for top half, dark blue for affects)
Attack messages that involve me (I hit someone, someone hits me)
spell messages (utters the words)
spells cast (Your eyes tingle)
spells taking affect (turns blue and shivers)
clerical spells (narrows eyes, closes eyes momentarilly)
death messages (is dead, is slain)
spellupdate stuff (plague,poison)
tells
yells
says (I can't do esays obviously, but that only draws more attention to
-----them, which is appropriate)
Disarm messages
White Aura
affect list: I highlight kind of complexly. I highlight the
-----word "spell/skill/power" in dark blue and the affect itself in light blue
My prompt is colorcoded, with each part a different color, except the
-----weapon advantages, since if I color code those the natural colors
-----won't show
Objects worn by others as well as objects worn by myself

Skill wearoffs too, but I consider that the same as spell wearoffs.

I also highlight sleep messages, since sleep really doesn't have a successful cast message

Slightly off-subject, I also highlight the word "advantage"

I think most of that covers the colors I have. My identify colorization alone takes up like 25 triggers.

I'm also accustomed to having colored "clan" tags on where, so I highlight cabal chars according to their color (like the Justice highlighter, but one for each)

Some of these are less necessary, obviously, than others. I originally also tried to colorize roomnames and roomdescs as well as objects/mobs seperately, but I never got those triggers to work and I eventually got used to grey mobs/titles (I'm +brief anyway)

I basically realized one day that I could fix almost everything I didn't like about AR via color-triggers, as opposed to other muds that have better colors that have balance issues and whatnot that are completely unfixable via triggers.

The only thing really left for me to do trigger/script-wise is to figure out a way to make a graphical compass that shows each direction since that's how I learned to move around on muds I played before I came here.

(The dashes were a seemingly vain attempt to make the list easier to read, since it wouldn't indent/space properly for me)

P.S. I think the default color scheme should stay as-is, just in case the rest of this post implies otherwise.

I for one don't like a lot of colors. ButI would like to be able to cutostmize the color for the important stuff, or just the stuff that should stand out. So yes, no color to start off, little color when turned on, but with the ability to customize colors as you go along if you choose.

I would like to have the option of whenever you use the in game target command, the name of the person you target is highlighted in red (or whatever color you want) in everything (who lists, where lists, room contents). I've had trouble setting this up using JMC highlights, and it doesn't always get every instance. So yeah, that's the only thing I would like to see added.

*I* think it's nauseating, sure, but I seem to be a minority here. I've played muds like Jamus is referencing, so I know how aggravating it is to have more color than you want.

If anything, I'd just like more control over colorization, what other people want as their colors is entirely up to them.

If not as a default, then it should be an option. (color theme old or some such)

The spell colour spray should display text in the color that effects. I forget the exact wording but colour spray is somthing like, orange rays weaken bla bla bla. it should just be orange letters saying you weaken so and so, or red letters saying you slow whomever. well it is just a thought and you made the damn pole. Stop the insanity, you know I have to read all the bull shit I see.

Didnt you say you had friends who refused to play because of the colour scheme. That's the only reason I joined into the discussion here.
