Hit and run is a tactic you can use to get an edge over your opponents. It allows you to beat off people who are stronger than you in equipment/levels/etc. In extreme circumstances you may even be able to handily defeat groups of opponents by picking off softest target, or buff attackers that look twice as strong as you. (But not four times as strong, there are limits.)

In order to execute "hit and run" you must initiate attacks on your opponent. Usually do this with murder for most efficient damage for lag involved. Even mage classes can do well with murder given enough damage of their own. Then after you have "hit" your opponent, run away from the fight. When they give chase, hit them first again. Aggressive opponents are the most vulnerable to the hit and run. Even just 5 or 6 of these done successfully will cause major damage and make your attacker reconsider.

Combined with sleeping over hours and curing items and spells, a hit and run can turn even the most mediocre fighter into a surprisingly resilient one. Keep in mind that a lot of hp items may protect you from being caught off-guard by a tough opponent, but also greatly reduces the effectiveness of hit and run, so that they will be able to just dominate you with overwhelming damage you can't return.
