I've always wondered, is having you str, int, wis, dex and con trained to one or two less then max, but wearing gear like the steel belt of whatever else that adds to it, so it is maxed the same as training it to max? Or is it better to just spend the trains?

I've never really been able to think of a way to figure this out myself, so I'm asking.

The numeric value you have for each stat is just that. The value. It is the same value, no matter if its because its from a steel belt, or from a train. 20 CON is 20 CON.

What ever your modified stat is, that's the value that the game looks at. So if you're a couple con shy of max and put on a steel belt right before you level you'll gain hp just like you had max con.

That being said, I still think it's a good idea to max your stats. When you're trying to make up stat penalties caused by armor or something it's easier to just have to make up -1 dex instead of 3 because you didn't train it fully.

I'd rather have a few extra trains than maxed stats. I wouldn't do it with a warrior, but a drow shaman for example can do well without max str because of giant strength. I'd say look at the class/race/align before and decide how easy itll be to keep your stats up.

This is a great question, one that I've been thinking about recently as well once I found out about the Champions Glory set. Thanks for getting a thread going on this.

Mithril is +1 hit +1 dex so if you have left dex one below max and trained hp, the mithril item is effectively +1 hit +10 hp instead. Of course you may want to offset the +dex with red dragon instead or something. But rares make it even more profitable to not train the dex stat. There are a lot of times you find dex on rares and end up trying to gamble items to get the full benefit out of them. (Of course I am ignoring the possibility of being hit by things like caltraps, which lowers your dex, and the buffer you had from rares is helpful when that happens..... but its a rare situation)

You should always keep con maxed though.

Worry about your stats depending on your class, a warrior doesn't need to worry about intelligence for example, an illusionist or shaman gains giant strength later on so you can deal with a lower strength. Etc. At pinnacle classes that don't have shield block don't need to worry about con, with the exception of maybe duergar thief, due to the racial legacy faerie bane which is dependent on constitution.

^ Wrong, every class should worry about con. It affects your healing rate and the amount of heal you get from healing spells. Pretty stupid not to max it with a shaman, healer, for a start, and even a mage should keep it topped up incase of a hobble scenario.
