why aren't you healing your opponent with -1 dam roll? =)
its because there is a complicated system of equations and variables that is set to output a balanced amount of damage depending on your dam roll, average damage, exploitation of vulnerabilities, and several other factors. therefore the error that flushes everything down the drain when dam roll is -1 could be anywhere, OR it has been left alone like that intentionally.
it used to be much worse where you'd need about -15 to -20 hit and dam roll to avoid hitting your training mobs, but since then you can avoid hitting them at around -5 hit and -5 dam. |

Dam roll is just a modifier to the damage you do. So if your dam roll is negative, that just means you will deal less damage than you normally would (based on the average damage of the weapon you're wielding). You need to 'identify' a weapon to see it's average damage. |
