He has some of the best equipment in the game and the giant mental vuln is among the strongest vulns in the game. It's no coincidence that the mental weapons are basically all segments and mostly two-handed. The duergar water vuln is not as severe as the dwarf water vuln.
Vulnerabilities can actually benefit a character in some fights, and here's why: You predictably focused on hitting the water vuln. Your opponent expected it and knew he could outdamage you with his bow. A winning strategy here would have been to use a mace, shield, and javelins and sideswipe him. That's also how to fight against effigies.

Fire giants have to play smart against vulns and trick people into using them so you can capitalize and beat their bottom. |
Neither of you were fire giants, but the logic remains the same. Your opponent did this and whooped you for it. |

I hope you are not asking us to seriously try to balance the game based on the damage from ONE attack.
Everybody played giants before they had a vuln, now nobody does because they do, and you think the problem is the vuln? Seems to be a success. I'm not terribly concerned about it. What would be alarming is if nobody played humans in a world where humans are supposed to be the most populous race. Here's two reasons why players would choose not to play humans.
1. They are not considered an "interesting" race, therefore given a choice between human and another equally balanced race, like elf, the majority of players will choose elf.
2. Humans are inferior to some other race.
We addressed #2. There were no human warriors, or even many duergar warriors before, and now there are. For that to happen, giants needed to be brought down a peg to make room. Obviously they will not have the numbers that they had before.
Its possible that we might've gone too far with it, and made giants into gnomes, although there are some things I'd counter that statement with.
1. Poseidon's trident provides an equal, if not bigger threat to dwarves than an effigy. There is no way to mitigate this damage as easily as just using berserk.
2. Two-handed weapons seem to be too strong to me. Its a hunch, but I think you're perceiving this ridiculous vuln damage partly because the two-handed weapons have a great baseline.
3. Giants 24 strength is still a TON of offensive power, like being able to hobble without a combat advantage, still being able to chain bash.. those are unique combat advantages that give them free wins vs inexperienced players and sometimes vets, that is why they deserve the vuln treatment. The vuln serves to put them at a sort of item disadvantage, which is a free win, unless you go out and get better items and hit as hard (which can be done).
Even if we did mess up, every dog has its day, and giant's day lasted more than long enough. It would be nice to fix if broken, but I don't see a lot of players crowing about it. |
