SURGE 'SURGE TIME'

The great tides of energies are always in flux within Thera, and upon
regular intervals they align themselves in such a way that mortals can be
empowered for tremendous self-improvement.  During a surge, mortals gain
experience and skill proficiency improvements at twice their normal rate.
They are also more likely to find additional gold from slaying creatures
(mobs).  Dying to an uncharmed creature (mob) will incur no experience loss
during a surge.  Lastly, the clash of surge-empowered mortals during a surge
has the side effect that when a mortal is slain by a fellow mortal (player)
or a charmed creature (pet or charmie), though he has suffered death (and
any possible accompanying constitution loss) there is a *chance* that he may
be resurrected as a ghost at his temple *without* having his total number of
resurrections reduced (no loss of vitality or condition).
 
The amount of time remaining in the current surge or until the next surge
begins can be found by the TIME command.
 
NOTE: Surges are regularly scheduled mud-wide events based on the server time.
They are evenly spaced 40 hours apart to allow our players in all time zones to
have a good chance of being able to catch one or more surges during the week.
The current surge schedule is:
 
SUNDAY :: 15:00 - 17:00
TUESDAY :: 9:00 - 11:00
THURSDAY :: 3:00 - 5:00
FRIDAY :: 21:00 - 23:00
 
All times are given in server time, which is United States Mountain Time.


I've always said that my goal is to make AR the ideal mud I'd want to play on myself, if my life (and mud duties) ever allows me to play a mortal again. Well, as people get older they have more constraints on their time, and I know that were I a player right now, I could certainly use a feature like surge time.

The concept is simple. For every 40 hours, we have 2 hours of "surge":

* double exp gained
* double skill % improvement rate
* increased mob gold (right now we're thinking doubled)
* no exp loss to mob death
* chance of no vitality/condition loss for dying to PK

We want to give people an incentive to all come together at set intervals across the week, so that people with less time to spend on AR can be able to find groups, gangbang each other, gamble, roleplay, or do whatever else it is they want. This way, for some of our busier players, they have a good chance of having at least one good playing session every week as long as they can fit one or more of the surges into their weekly schedule. Not everyone has the luxury of being a student with loads of free time on their hands. Surge times take up less than 5% of the mud's total uptime hours, and I'm hoping that players will make these special 5% of hours count.

Surges have been scheduled as they are to allow players from different time zones to all have a shot at at least making one surge per week. I know there'll be some of you who still won't be able to make a surge, or others of you who would like the schedule changed so that you can make it to more surges, but the current schedule is a compromise that best fits our current U.S.-heavy pbase during the weekends while still allowing "prime time" surges elsewhere in the world during the week. As is true of most compromises, nobody will be completely happy, but nevertheless I think the vast majority of players will have their playing experiences improved by surges.

The first surge starts Friday at 9:00pm server time (that's 8pm Pacific and 11pm Eastern). Be sure to log on and take advantage of it if you can!
