If characters arent logged in for a long time do they automatically get deleted or something? I keep getting an illegal name message.

Yep, if your characters don't log on for a really long time, they're purged from the system.

I want to say that it is around four or five months...or at least that is how long I was away and when I came back most of my characters were gone.

five or six months is fairly generous. I'll explain this as far as I know it.
It depends on your characters level for one thing. Low levels get purged quicker then high levels. It's not quite exponential either, but a 50 will last a fair bit longer then a 30, twice as long, if not more. I think you're looking at more like, 4 months, for a level 50, then 5 or 6 months. I do believe they will save your pfiles for you though, if you have extenuating circumstances though.(Like going off to Iraq to get blown up or moving or some such)
