EXP for quest?

Are we suppose to experience points for quest? I just created a new character and completed the trials quest, then I went looking for eq and noticed I was level 2, I have yet to attack anything? The this happened:

Centre of the Western Arena
You are inside the Arena. The floor is sandy and bare, but has clearly
been well travelled upon. The Arena extends around you in all directions

A rope ladder leads down into a python pit.

A small sign has been staked into the ground.
The animal handler is here, selling the tamed animals he has captured.
The animal handler says 'Look out! An extremely deadly snake is loose below.'
Questor: Defeat the python in the pit.

The Python Pit

A ladder leads up to a safe watchtower, overlooking the battlefield.

A rather large python looks at you and hisses, 'dinner'.
A python flashes a key in your face and flicks it away.
Hint: Use the three R's - run, rest, and return. Take it slow if need be.
