DoTA was the grandfather of LoL / HoN / RoI / LoCo and other ARTS/MOBA games. LoL has a horrible community and a bunch of whiny unskilled players. HoN has the most challenging gameplay with same immature community, RoI (rise of immortals) is the new thing that has an excellent community and also interesting gameplay. LoCo is MIA.
DoTA 2 is pretty lame from the beta testing i've done, i'm not going to play it.

I suggest checking out Rise of Immortals, its the AR of ARTS/MOBA world, smallish community but good peeps, i did a lot of work with Petroglyph Games and learned a lot about their perspective, RoI is a great game and will be even greater in time.
