'DEFENSES'
This is a list of the defenses.  The order of checks is randomized,
after armor.
armor class    - causes attacks to miss and deal lower damage
dodge          - avoiding an attack by getting out of its way
counterbalance - an enhanced form of dodge practiced by rogues
parry          - blocking an attack by meeting it with a weapon
dual parry     - blocking an attack with an offhand weapon
set parry      - blocking with a two-handed weapon
shield block   - using shields and bucklers to absorb attacks
riposte        - countering with an attack
Some skills help to defend as well.
reflex mode    - a warrior-only defensive mechanic
blind fighting - removes the effects of dirt kick on defense
Some spells can be used to lower or absorb damage outright.
sanctuary      - reduces all damage by 50%
protection     - reduce damage from opposite alignment by 20%
shield         - absorbs damage
armor          - a little damage reduction
barrier        - prevents all physical damage, at cost of mana
mana shield    - prevents all magical damage, at cost of mana
