Introducing a new deafness effect. You'll feel it if you get an exploding palm to the face, and soon during other occasions...
When you're deaf, you won't be able to hear properly. You can talk and yell all you like but won't hear your own voice. Global channels will be affected as well. Fear not, bards and mages; this doesn't affect the impact of songs or casted spells - however, bards won't be able to duet properly, as they can't harmonize with their partner. |

this might be a bit overkill but as a suggestion make deafness like a headbutt? This may give a bit of flavor for monks to try tiger style vs mages instead of depending on defensive stances |

Oh. I forgot to add this:
You'll have less concentration, because you're trying so hard to determine whether you said/sung the words right.
So yes it's a bit like getting a headbutt, briefly disorienting. |

Vanisse that doesn't make sense... if you've mastered the spell, you should know the words by heart. How can you not hearing yourself mean you didn't speak the words properly? |

have you ever been in an anechoic chamber Andrael? it's pretty fuckin weird. And that happens all of a sudden out of nowhere while you're trying to do something hard (like cast a spell in combat). Imagine you're driving your car on the highway and then you just go deaf out of nowhere. |

Think about when you're blasting music with headphones in and try to talk. You end up shouting just to hear yourself. And if you talk in a normal voice you still kind of doubt whether you sound normal or like a retard. |

This should prevent people from being affected by bard songs too. That would fuck bards up since they would lose concentration singing songs on others and wouldn't be able to be affected by any beneficial songs.
I think bard's should also be able to cause deadness with their 'sharp dischord' song. If you implement my above idea it would be a double edged sword. The bard would make them deaf, but would be unable to land any more songs on his opponent. He could still use beneficial songs on himself, though, since the bard himself isn't deaf.
So going up against a mage they could sign sharp dischord, make the mage deaf, and then focus on landing uppercuts/uncanny attack/dirt/etc for the rest of the fight.
And bard vs bard would just be a race to land sharp dischord.
This could make an otherwise useless bard song into something interesting. |

We were planning to add it to Sharp Discord, but at the end decided against it as having a self-gimping song would be a bit weird for the bard. As it stands right now, deafness doesn't impair actual song effects, but they can't hear the words (will be fiddling with this). So far I've just set the groundwork for deafness and we will be gradually introducing the impacts where it makes sense and doesn't gimp casters and bards too heavily. |

This entire post is directed mostly at Divsky:
It might be cool to have deafness affect a few skills, but we should make a list of all the skills that could be affected by it then prune it.
But, it might be too hard to make a list that feels good. I don't think a deaf person should be immune from all bard songs, since most if not all of them are magic cast by the bard's singing and the effects don't normally come from the song itself. A penalty on some of the bonuses might be appropriate, but that might also be hard to discover since deafness is relatively rare.
For example: It would be reasonable for a player to believe that being deaf would protect him from a berserker's Roar skill because you can't hear the berserker roaring. But, it would also be reasonable to believe being deaf would NOT protect from Roar since a berserker screaming in your face is intimidating regardless of whether or not you can hear it.
It's dangerous to give players that kind of signal if the mechanic is inconsistent. |

If a bard's song doesn't affect someone who is sleeping, why should it affect someone who is deaf? |
