I didn't get the hp that I got from that level on that hour, which seems strange to me because it would have saved me.....

IIRC, you don't gain the HP *upon* the rank, but it's added to your maximum, hence the "226" right next to the 16. It wouldn't make sense to have you gain a rank and INSTANTLY have your health, mana and moves increase, would it?

when you rank, your maximum hps goes up but your actual hp does not go up. you need to "heal" up to your max hp.
