http://abandonedrealms.wolfpaw.net/addiction.php
Since we've been losing quite a few players to mud addiction (and not just recently...) I drafted this for our site to help the rest of us neatly sidestep it. It is not linked on the site yet as I am looking for ways to improve the article. Your thoughts/feedback are appreciated. |

One point more to add
- Addiction leads to extreme procrastination
i.e. "I have/need to do this, etcetc", but you know you never will when mudding.
Precaution/Action against such procratination is to set your priorities,
and replace "have/need" with "want".
i.e. "I want to do this!!"
Further explanation on this article found by Dava titled Overcoming Procrastination here
I've thought of something to help aware addicts take a further step in breaking addiction. An opt-in, self-imposed system can be implemented to freeze your IP for a duration of time you can set after your character quits.
Code: |
<20hp 150ma 100moves> stasis
You have opted to impose a default 1 hour stasis on your IP.
|
OR
Code: |
<20hp 150ma 100moves> stasis 5
You have opted to impose a 5 hour stasis on your IP.
|
which would result in:
Code: |
Connected to Abandonedrealms.com 9000...
<blah blah castle ansii>
By what name do you wish to be remembered? MyNextChar
Password: ....
You cannot connect yet.
Someone from your IP has opted in to impose a stasis of 5 hours.
Please note that this is to help addicts break their addiction by lending them a helping hand. Good luck, and have a nice wait...
While you have time to kill, you can vote at the webpage to attract new players. http://www.abandonedrealms.com/forum

So i could screw over other people from my IP, when i want to, for as long as i want to? I really don't think a video game can be a life changing addiction. |

Uh right. So how many other people got their life ruined/half ruined because of addiction please raise up their hands! *raises and expects to see quite a few more*
Nothing beats waking up at 4am just to MUD when school starts at 7.
Nothing beats skipping school because you forgot your homework and decided to just stay home and MUD.
Nothing beats waking up at 5am just to MUD and not study during exam week, when exam starts at 1pm.
Wee we suck! |

*raises hand*
I mud when I should be doing chores.
I mud when I should be excercising.
I mud when I should be working on 3 term papers, 1 essay, and 1 oral report.
I mud when I should be studying for exams/finals.
I do usually (9/10) pick hanging out with my gf over AR though.
I love every minute of it though. Except for linkdead-deaths. Those suck. |

AR is my only escape from a world that has begun to suck more and more every single day, I can't believe how much the Springfield changed during my 6 months on the Hartford, but it's a hell-hole now. By the end of the day my soul has been sucked from me so much that the only thing I have the motivation to do is to hole myself up in my barracks room and play AR. And drink.
So I wouldn't consider myself addicted to AR. I think a better term would be to say I'm dependant on it. That and alchohol. I do think there's a difference between the two things, somehow. My life doesn't revolve around the mud, which would make me an addict, it's just that it's too sucky to live through without the mud. |

*sniffs* That takes me back to the old days.. Ahhhhhh three days straight. I would go days without a shower just so I could mud. my eating habits went to hell, I started to lose weight from it, my fingers were stained orange from cheetos, my hair smelled like cigarette smoke mingled with ganja and hashish mix. empty bottles of coke lying all over the floor around my computer desk. five ashtreys with atleast a cartons worth of cigs in them. At the store I worked at, the manager, asst. manager and myself would race home to see who could log on first. Fun times though! |
