I think that if you misread or mispronounce a scroll that it should not just dissapear, sure they dissapear if the magic of the scroll is used and the scroll consumed in the process, but if you screw it up it should just waste you time and you have to try again. My thought is that scrolls should not dissapear until they work. Could this be a possible change?

The reason scrolls are so cheap is that they have the possibility to fail. You can get a potion from darkhaven for the same amount of flight as a flying scroll....But add 3k to the price. 2k is cheap. So there is a chance of suckage. |

so... to make scrolls more realisitic the price would have to be raised, hm, yea, that is not a good trade.

It's not an issue of realism, but rather one of consistency. Mana is expended from casting, communing, or focusing a spell, even after losing concentration: it's not that you didn't cast when that happens, but rather that you've miscast. Likewise, a charge is used up upon invoking any magical item, whether the item was invoked correctly to produce the desired effect or not. And all magical items are consumed when all their charges have been used.
Scrolls are simply a type of magical item with a single charge on each one. Use, gone. Success is irrelevant.
[Edit: By the way, scrolls are cheaper than equivalent potions because they require a separate skill to use and potions do not. Being forced to use the item via a skill involves additional restrictions such as proficiency check, level check, class availability of skill, skill usage lag, etc. IMO, due to all the additional hassles, fly potions are still underpriced compared to fly scroll costs.] |
