Yeah. So obviously I'm not the best thing ever. But this is stupid how bad I get my shit handed to me by rangers.
  1. blarg Schist get's curb stomped by a ranger -
In most fights, your first weapon selection is a gamble. As a fire giant against a ranger, I suggest favoring a segmented weapon and shield. The segment will have advantage over most ice weapons and the segment/shield combo is solid enough with sideswipe to overpower any of his attempts at using a bow.

When you're dirted, you're going to want to reflex most of the time. All things considered, the one thing that cost you the most in the first fight was the shield switch and sideswipe right after he hid behind the boar. It gave him time to land that dirt kick.
  2. Schist Schist get's curb stomped by a ranger -
yeah. I entered sideswipe too soon. I didn't see the retreat coming..

My first weapon choice gamble gave me superiority over his dual wield. If I had started with a shield he'd have double disarmed me and then bow raped me. So.. Also. I didn't have time to reflex when I was dirted. If you'll notice I was at about 150hp by the time I could do anything.. so I berserked to give me a health boost so I could wait out dirt and flee. At that point winning wasn't an option anymore. I am a fire giant, with some pretty sweet gear, and four levels on him, and I still get outdamaged. I have way more strength and health then he does. I don't get it. I hear alot of people say that it's the rank. That at levels 35-44 ish rangers just straight up own. If that's the case then it's stupid and ought to be fixed? Idk. I can't figure out anything to do against them. Except camp on rivers. And then they just don't come and we never fight...
  3. arragas Schist get's curb stomped by a ranger -
You had nearly 600 health without sanc and you fled to quaf a misty air potion... Should have definitely rethought that decision and made sure you had sanc up...

Also... "I knew my recall would fail... but figured I'd try anyways. Just in case." I don't get why, if you knew your recall would fail, you would still waste the time to attempt it instead of getting prepaired to either fight or flee.

Thanks for the post, its good to have mistakes seen and brought to your attention. Rangers are a difficult fight! I don't like fighting them
  4. Schist Schist get's curb stomped by a ranger -
Fine arragas, whatever. I didn't KNOW that it would fail. I strongly thought. It's been a really long time since I tried to recall from there. Wasn't perfectly sure if it worked or not.

Also, yeah. I realize now that quaffing the flight potion was retarded and not quaffing aura.. but I didn't think that he'd have closed the door. Which was also really stupid of me.

Did I say anywhere I was perfect? I think the only thing I'm upset about is the fact that I didn't make enough mistakes to get beaten as badly as I did. The things you pointed out were after I had lost. Why did I lose so bad? Blarq? Blarg? I can't tell in my browser, he offered some thoughts about that fact. But I still think those are too minimal to result in the ass beating I received.

This has happened before with an entirely different ranger also. I hate rangers.
  5. blarg Schist get's curb stomped by a ranger -
training, luck, and rng come to mind. Even the best fighters lose a lot of skirmishes, they just get away and reset until things fall into place and then they close the deal.
  6. lmauge Schist get's curb stomped by a ranger -
as someone who played a lot of rangers and lost to a bunch of warriors its really all about timing. I got hosed against galurn because of a sideswipe that lagged me so hard then he landed bash and the fight was over in a 2 or 3 rounds. Against a dex warrior its just dirt flee murder spam. Olyn is right luck has so much to do with it, its just insane. As a warrior if you aren't winning the round don't stay in it to try and turn it around flee heal up and try to get lucky and hit a hobble or a combat skill like sideswipe so you can use your strength to your advantage with winding kick. Believe me the days of standing their and pounding each other spamming bash are long gone. its more about timing and catching the guy in the wrong combat stance and being able to take advantage of it.
  7. Schist Schist get's curb stomped by a ranger -
I've played alot of warriors. And I've killed alot of every class. Rangers has always been my weakness, but regardless, I've killed my fair share. I just dislike the way the new weapon wielding changes have turned things. Hobble is stupid useless now. You land a hobble and lag yourself for two rounds. That's like getting bashed by a giant. And all the other person does is instantly switch weapons and land some skill on you and you get your ass handed to you. Hobble isn't worth crap. Except maybe against rogues. With the new weapon switch changes the best possible skill you can use is dirt kick. Because it blinds and prevents weapon switches, and prevents fleeing like hobble does. Hobble got nerfed and dirt got ubered. So low dex races get hosed. The only plausible way of killing a ranger I can think of, is sideswiping them. But if you stay using a shield the whole time, you get double disarmed and killed. If you use anything else, you get dirted and die before you can flee. Especially if you're a low dex race and dirt lasts like four rounds. Seriously? That is SO long. Especially when you're eating dismembers through sanc by an icicle. That has like the lowest average ever. what the hell?

And personally, I think fights being "insanely" dependent on luck is straight up stupid. And I kind of disagree on that being the case. Because I know the vets kick the trash out of everyone repeatedly. So they obviously make their own luck.

I mean, idk. Obviously rangers die to warriors. But I just can't help getting over the new weapon wield changes. And i can't helping getting over how it feels unbalanced against low dex races. But what do I know...
  8. lmauge Schist get's curb stomped by a ranger -
When I say luck its based on the fact that both fighters are evenly matched and one guy has a great round and you don't. It can easily swing in your favor but there are times as in this fight where it just doesn't make any sense. You have combat style and weapon advantage, but it didn't mean a damn thing because you got hosed. One thing I have noticed while playing warriors is it is not to your advantage to have combat style at the loss of a defense. All you have is parry and dodge but I am sure his hit roll is higher than yours which is why he is landing all of those attacks and I am sure as a fire giant your defenses aren't mastered which in most cases is probably a wash when you do master them but he has mastered his weapons and 2nd and third attacks. And I think your right the only way to kill a ranger is through sideswipe, I do agree that hobble appears to be useless if he can switch weapons before you can take advantage of it. Also the hp difference you think you have on him is not as high as you may think. If he 1 prac everything as a half elf I bet he has about 700 to 750 hp. Even disadvantaged weapon and style he was still wining the fight because of dex and probably hit roll.

Ok. An evenly matched fight being decided a little by luck makes sense. I retract my disagreement.

If he 1 practiced everything and has all those mastered and I 3 practiced everything and don't have them mastered. That just aint fair. lol. Especially if it means he's got loads more hp then he should. Sheesh.

Yeah. Hobble got nerfed so hard. And you about said the same thing as me. High dex races have it easy and low dex races get hosed. Because strength based skills like hobble are useless, and dirt kick rapes so hard it's retarded.

I mean, like you said, I was advantaged and superior and I got my shit handed to me. what would happen if i was inferior? Is it really supposed to work this way?

Why is it not fair? You're playing a fire giant, they're dumb as rocks. You knew this coming into this character didn't you?
  11. Schist Schist get's curb stomped by a ranger -
well I know that Iolo. And I expect gnomes and elves and stuff to one prac and still have masteries. But half-elves don't have that high of int and wis to 1 prac and still have masteries. That just seems a bit much. Imo. And besides that's not really what I'm discussing here. Who even knows if that's the case in real life or just what lmauge said. So oh well.
  12. iolo Schist get's curb stomped by a ranger -
I know that's not the main thing you're discussing (complaining about) here, but you DID complain about it and therefore you're opening yourself up for comments. Such is the nature of forums.

So here's the deal with half-elves...they have a racial legacy that allows them to learn their skills/spells super fast (seehttp://abandonedrealms.com/realms/races/halfelf.php). So while he probably didn't 1 practice everything, he is going to master everything exceptionally fast.
  13. Schist Schist get's curb stomped by a ranger -
Yeah. I know. I guess I need to quadruple read all my posts(I changed this part about 5 times after quadruple checking it, so I'm just leaving it out)

I know half-elves learn quick. But I still doubt he 1 praced stuff. If he did 1 prac stuff then that's crazy. That's all I'm saying about that.. I mean who know's how many practices he actuallyused. Who knows how many things he's actually mastered.. why are we arguiing about this? lol.
  14. blarg Schist get's curb stomped by a ranger -
He did 1 prac everything and has a ton of stuff mastered, just not one of the skills I told him to master for induction.
  15. Kessor Schist get's curb stomped by a ranger -
One prac for half-elves takes them to 61%. That's REALLY close to 75%. If he wasted another prac on 14%, I think THAT'S crazy.

Anyways. Rangers are very dangerous, absolutely, but there are a few things you could've EASILY done to improve your odds in this fight. I've had Legion Rangers and non-Legion Rangers that did fairly well and I've killed rangers plenty of times. I talked about Kedac in the other log. When Hrimoyan was a mortal, Kedac fought him and beat the hell out of him. Granted, there's a few important changes to the game (such as the lack of weapon lag), but things are still going to be pretty similar.

First, recognize his strengths. Pets. Bows. Volley. Double disarm. Herb. Those are the biggest ones, I think.

Now focus on how to stop it. The first clue anyone would (or at least should ) tell you about fighting rangers is to not fight them out of town. Stay in town and don't leave unless you have a good shot at killing them.

Also, like was said, take away dirt kick by fighting on water. There's a water room in Seringale, Timaran, and Valour - all cities. Boom, you just took away herb, pets, camouflage, campfire, carve, and the ranger bow skills. That's GOING to have some impact. Conversely, you've lost nothing.

Bows, double disarm, and volley are all weapon-dependent, so are unaffected by location. Double disarm is (in my experience) harder to land on a shield-wearing opponent. Besides, don't dual wield against a ranger. Ever. I would put myself defensive before a fight as a ranger every time so they would dual wield. Rangers get no lag for switching to bows (which now, probably translates to insta-advantage), so you dual wield, use a skill, they eat that, but instantly switch to bow and start pulling out all their bow-reliant skills... which you. can't. deal. with. If they're using a shield, use a shield, too. It's much safer for you. Wear that shield and bodyslam them to keep them from volleying you to death. A lagged ranger is a dead ranger. If he retreats behind his animal, that's a two-round lag. Flee, come back in, free round of attacks. Make it too costly for him to do and he won't do it.

When rangers use shields, they'll generally use either a sword or spear. I rarely used whips (unless it was a pimp whip) because of low parry. Sure they're good offensively, but in a ranger's mind, "That's what the pets are for." If you've taken away the pets by fighting in town, usually rangers don't make the association and change weapons to whip for their offensive uses so you've effectively stripped them of their offense.

This ranger was dual-wielding, so be careful. If you dual wield to match, he can use his bow... which you don't want. If you use a two-handed, he can wear a shield and volley... bad, but certainly overcomable. If you use a shield, he can try to double disarm... Also bad, but also overcomable. You have to weigh the risks. Which weapon is better? Your single-handed/shield combo or your 2-hand? Consider average of the weapons AND how good your shield is. If you've got a shield that is 10 dam and 10 hit and 100 hp, but a slightly inferior one-handed weapon than your 2-hander, I'd probably still go with the shield combo. No, there's no shield like that. It was an example.

Also, realize that rangers are berserkers weakness. If you rage and get to pretty hurt and he's in awful, all he's got to do is tame you and it's over.... which takes away one of your strongest advantages. I highly suggest roaring him to help prevent this. It can still happen, but it can help decrease the odds of him doing so.

I hope this has been some help.

Oh, btw, before you start bitching about "low-dex got nerfed", go make a drow warrior. Xenyar did it well, yes, but I guarantee you'll find them much harder. Until you give it a shot, stop bitching. Aren't you Legion? Act it.
  16. Kessor Schist get's curb stomped by a ranger -
And I just read that you're a warrior. So rangers aren't your weakness. Even better. In that case, disregard the paragraph of advice for berserkers and replace it with this.

When I got dirted, I went into reflex mode. It can be a serious lifesaver, but you've GOT to master blind fighting and riposte. Focus on those and you'll see what I mean. Also, since rangers don't learn as many weapons as you, use a weapon he doesn't learn to help decrease his blocking of your attacks if possible... don't make it your number one priority, but if you can tack it on, it can't hurt. Also, have you practiced volley? If not, invest in it... it can be powerful. Always have javelins on you.

If you have a good one-handed weapon and a shield and he switches to dual, consider double-gripping. Maybe reflex mode, too... that's very situational, though.

As I said, I hope this has helped and good luck to you.
  17. Schist Schist get's curb stomped by a ranger -
Wow. Act like a Legion. Whatever man. This is out of game, out of character. I can say whatever the hell I want.

That being said, I appreciate you're time in providing some advice. I've got to admit I already know and do most of what you said. Maybe I came across as an idiot. My bad. But regardless I appreciate that you're taking the time to offer up support.
  18. Nadrin Schist get's curb stomped by a ranger -
Aside from that, Kedac? Berlo? Noobs. No way Kedac ever killed Hrimoyan in a fair fight. Maybe if he caught Hrimoyan afk... In fact I believe thats exactly what happened. I had Nadrin and Kadril around the time that Kedac was in legion...
  19. Kessor Schist get's curb stomped by a ranger -
I didn't say I killed Hrimoyan. I didn't. My tracking skills are too poor for that. I said I beat the hell out of him. I did. He got away. Nadrin, I think it's funny you're saying we were noobs since I distinctly remember Berlo raped you a couple times. I'm trying to be constructive. You're not. So don't waste everyone's time with such stupid posts. And yes, I called Schist winy, but you've got him beat by a long country mile and most everyone here would proooobably agree.

How many times have you "quit" AR after getting completely pwned and come back? 5? 6? More? Ridiculous that you have the guts to come here and talk crap about me.

I won't reply to you again in either of these logs, so don't bother... unless you have to get the last word. If so, feel free, it's all yours.

And yes, this post has a purpose. Schist, you CAN'T say whatever the hell you want. I thought that once, but I got booted from Legion for something I said on invokation. You've got to be careful.

(Said with only helpful intent. Just a heads-up, Schist.)

Alright everybody cool it down. Nothing to see here move along! Get to class!
  21. Schist Schist get's curb stomped by a ranger -
lol. Misworded. Sorry. Not whatever I want. Believe me. If anyone knows the limits about what you can and can't say, it's me. I just thought it was funny you called me out about not acting like a legion when this is invokation and I haven't done anything whiny except post logs of me getting my ass handed to me by a ranger. I don't think it's whining when I say I got pwned. When I clearly got pwned. I don't understand where the whining is in there..
  22. Kessor Schist get's curb stomped by a ranger -
Never mind, I apologize. I hope to see more logs from you in the future and good luck. :)
  23. Schist Schist get's curb stomped by a ranger -
I wasn't going to post anything else. But I gotta say. Everything else aside, that last post Kessor earns you a ton of points in my book. Thank you for showing a level of maturity that I had long since thought didn't exist here. Now I feel bad. lol.
