    It was because of that rank - before it he did tons of damage, now only scratches, and his hp was much higher than before.

    Mercenaries start out with a given xp tnl, which is usually around -300% or so for a pet of the same level. It's not so big for halflings, so they're easy to level up. when they level up, they become roughly the same as a pet level 6, losing ac (which is why the guard started hitting it) damage, and hp.
