    Could well have been some Immortal having fun. They are able to possess creatures if they so desire... I saw the red dragon from the sewers flying about in Haon Dor a few days ago, and it did not attack me immediately like it normally does. But, as one of the rules I remember said, if something odd happens due to the Immortals choosing to possess something, you're supposed to react as your character might.
