In my experience, Foreign weapon type + bash = dead paladin. They are after all clerics with warrior attacks, limited weapon selection, two defenses max, and no protective shield.
That said, you've discovered what kills paladins. Forcing them to stay in a fight against someone with larger hp, not able to cast affs or run and heal. It's largely the same reason clerics get protective shield. lag skills buttfuck them.
Combat style advantage only matters against warriors, rangers, and berserkers. Against anything else, just put your best foot forward, even if its "inferior combat style". Same for weapon matchup to some extent. It's only really important vs rogues.
