- You should be running a hell of a lot farther away before healing. If possible, lose your foe first and then heal...or at least try to.
2) You were in weapon disadvantage. Against a warrior, a paladin will become swiss cheese if you don't stay superior/advantaged. I think I mentioned that to you in-game, too :)
I think it had to do with mentally clamming up at the very end and wanting to get a heal off to try to outlast another possible murder attack. I used to do that with healing classes.
Iendlir got hebleon once by leading him on and on through mountains and then getting a big health chunk back and turning the tables.
paladins and dk both suck for reason num 2. they get no benefit from weapon or combat style advantage, other than overcoming parry, and hybrids are meant to focus on their spells.

not direct quotes, but close enough. I don't think I'd ever choose disarm or shield disarm against a warrior or ranger but I suppose it's something to try if you're in an advantageous position and just want to test it.
For my part, I highly doubt weapon or combat style skills would be beneficial to hybrids. The hybrid power is in having weapon selection, third attack, shield block, and ability to cast 1 round lag spells.
I believe another thing dav said was

the idea being that hybrids are half of two classes and not just warriors with wrath/fireball.
Otherwise, they both have strikes for unwarded casters, mobs, or each other, and their spells. Dual wield just allows them to fight casters, in addition to increasing the damage of strikes per attempt.
And no, I don't think paladins or dark-knights need a dual wield skill. Properly played, they're both good at a number of things. Only real downside is that they don't do so well against neutral characters, and dark-knights don't have as easy a time against evils.
