Inside a Guard House Compared to the forest that surrounds it, the interior of this building is like entering a different world. The dim interior stands in stark contrast to the light outside, and is lit only by a few guttering torches held in iron sconces. The air is thick with the scent of stale sweat, cheap ale, and something sharper - a bravado of unwavering devotion. Rough wooden benches line the walls, littered with discarded weapons, cracked tankards, and half-eaten rations. The guards themselves mull about, their uniforms grimy and patched. Their eyes, narrowed in the semi-darkness, gleam with a mixture of boredom, suspicion, and the unsettling alertness of those used to lurking in the shadows.

Their surface writhes with forgotten runes and monstrous carvings, their pitted texture hinting at battles long past. Time has ravaged their form - tendrils of ivy cling to monstrous hinges, and chipped stonework suggests fallen towers. Yet, an undeniable presence emanates from those gates, a mixture of crumbling grandeur and a power that refuses to be extinguished. Whispers seem to drift in the dusty air, echoes of a city that stubbornly waits, both a promise and a terrible threat.

[The party heads out to the Broken Shrines north of Darkhaven to investigate.]
Broken Shrines You tread upon what seems like to be an old place of worship. Several altars are laid out here with some broken pedestals in between. They are solely made of a bluish type of rock that you have not seen before. Three prominent pillars stand out, each with geometric shapes inscribed on them. Crows from a distance gaze down and scream shrilly in the moist air.

A Tear in Space Something utterly terrifying has happened here. All around you, the laws of reality have shattered and in their place - a gaping wound in the fabric of the universe. Weightless objects swirl in a maddening dance: gleaming swords, shattered pottery, perhaps even the tattered remnants of a book. The air crackles with chaotic energy, pierced by searing flashes of lightning crimson, emerald, and blinding sapphire. An overwhelming sense of unease washes over you, a primal whisper that this place is fundamentally hostile to the natural order.

The Gates of Taekir Massive gates loom before you, forged from iron so impossibly dark it seems to swallow the light itself. Their surface writhes with forgotten runes and monstrous carvings, their pitted texture hinting at battles long past. Time has ravaged their form - tendrils of ivy cling to monstrous hinges, and chipped stonework suggests fallen towers. Yet, an undeniable presence emanates from those gates, a mixture of crumbling grandeur and a power that refuses to be extinguished. Whispers seem to drift in the dusty air, echoes of a city that stubbornly waits, both a promise and a terrible threat.

[The gates of the legendary city of Taekir have been discovered. Though they remain locked tight, magically protected, with no key having been located yet. Two other things were found nearby the gates: a book and a scroll.]

A Brief Primer on the Planes
They are not what they seem. The planes are not as separate as they appear and depending on your own state, you can access different components of them. The Ethereal Plane is particularly interesting as a fabric that interconnects between various places. For example, we have discovered that there are places only accessible through the Ethereal Plane, just like there are places only accessible through the Void. This is key to exploring outside Taekir while maintaining undetected.

Taekir is not the city I remember. Something malevolent has consumed it. The dragons no longer seem to be our protectors, but our gods whom we must bow before else risk the loss of everything. The travesty of such a transformation I see in the drab black garb of the merchants and the silence in places once vibrant.
Whispers of war with the cities to the south are on the lips of the elite, who fear their own hoards may be used to fund the endeavor. Even more concerning is the willingness of the common person to accept what is happening. They are shrugging off the death of the city they grew up in. For whatever Taekir is now, it has changed. Haunted by the specter of violence and wreathed in shadow, the darkness has overcome everything but my memories.
This was a really fun event that had some very memorable moments!
While it was supposed to be a sneak in and sneak out event, Bonfo, strolls RIGHT IN to a massive group of Taekir warriors and only survives because of a clutch sanc from Hennef right before he walked through the door.
I also loved the part shortly after where Arelad says 'I think they've noticed us...' in the midst of a huge melee inside the guard house.
I appreciate everyone who has participated in this story arc so far. Looking forward to continuing the adventure in the coming weeks!
