His features are rather typical of his kind, although he sports a moustache that is ridiculously curled at both ends of his face. He is shorter than most dwarves you had seen before, and a brief look of weariness is sometimes obvious from his expression. Despite the battle-worn look on his face, you could almost still sense a strange air of calmness and danger about his being. Numerous scars run across the exposed areas of his body that were not covered by his armor, with a significantly deep one that seemingly ran from the top-right of his shoulder, diagonally across his back to the other end near his left hip. Amidst all these, the most interesting feature to note would be his incandescent blue eyes that occasionally appear to flash with a slight ruby red tint when he searches around his surroundings with a watchful purpose. Tordrak is in excellent condition.

Members of the Warlord cabal are eager to show what their long years of training and combat have given them in the way of skills and battle prowess. To demonstrate this to themselves and the world, they have been given the ability to CHALLENGE other Serins to single combat in an area of their own choosing. Once challenged, the other party may ACCEPT the duel, or DECLINE it. If the duel is declined, however, the Warlord may take offense to the dishonor done to them and pursue the battle anyhow, so be wary of whose challenges are accepted and turned down.
Those who participate in duels will have their wins and losses collected into a permanent RECORD which can be accessed by any Serin at any time (record <character>).

Honestly, after reading this log and all the comments, I am surprised this right here hasn't garnished more attention. Not only does the fish give full heal spell with no cd, when you look it up on the codex it's actually a pill, not a fish. Can hoard those for days without them decaying.
It's a good fight, and you certainly came prepared. Good one with the use of water arrows - it certainly caught me by surprise and I simply took too long to realise what was hitting me, by that time it was already too late. I will gladly take this loss, since you are clearly the better player.
That said though, I don't quite agree with monks retaining the benefits of the monk styles while wielding any form of weapons. You were in leopard wielding a bow and you were essentially riposting at least 75% of my dual-wielded attacks while raining down arrows upon me. This felt like a fringe case in which monks are able to circumvent the weakness of using bows (bow is a high damage weapon type that bypasses all dodge and parry attempts against an opponent in dual wield, with the drawback being unable to defend well). Even rangers, who possess the point blank skill, are not able to defend that well while using bows, so I don't see why monks who are supposed to be masters of hand-to-hand combat, be able to defend that well while wielding a weapon and dishing out high damage.
I had also fought before a monk in crane who was wielding a bow, and he was crane-wing technique blocking all my arrow shots, while piercing me with his arrows.
I think you could have countered the bow pretty easily by either using sideswipe or a 2-handed weapon. You were dual-wielding nearly constantly for the beginning of the fight, and defensive for most of the end. Dwarf is a tough matchup for monk, since most styles do magic damage (Dav, this is why tiger/dragon would have been a bad idea compared to drunken). You needed to take advantage of the fact that a monk can't switch styles more than a few times before running away to meditate.
The interesting utility that bow gives monks is the ability to switch from defensive to two-handed instantly, and I expected it to only work as a surprise followed by dirt/lag. I think a rematch could look quite different now that you know what to expect. I also didn't really think bow would work as well as it did...decided to try it out for giggles after Ozaru blew Bladefurry off after he suggested that on Mokoto's graveyard.
Right from the monk helpfile: "Monks shun weapons for the purpose of hurting others, instead concentrating upon a variety of fighting styles to adapt to situations they are faced with."
wielding a bow back will not win because point blank does not parry arrows, but a monk in leopard wielding a bow will still dodge and riposte arrows because they retain the defensive benefits of leopard even when wielding a weapon.
Anyway, to put things into perspective:
- A warrior in dual wield already has a hard time penetrating the defenses of leopard because of that super-effective riposte ability despite in a superior combat style.
- The fight between a dual wielding warrior against a bow-wielding ranger normally ends up with both sides hurting each other plenty, because bows are meant to have weak defenses.
Does it really make sense that you allow a monk to have both the best defenses (leopard style) and one of the best damage (bow) at the same time?
Like I said, this is a fringe case for monks because of the way monk styles work. As long as you have the style active in your affects, wielding a weapon does not remove the style benefits. Normally, this is not a common problem because most monk players do not cheese this, but do you really want to allow this?
-45 min duels is from dueling in the ford. Its really telling when a warrior can run off and tick regen from awful condition back up to quite a few wounds. Isnt this kinda masochistic to pick?

At the moment, the Ford is pretty much the go-to pick for any duel. I don't know if other areas need to be added to change this, or what. But it clearly favors monks because they just run away and heal, which is frustrating for everyone except the monk. On top of that, I'm of the strong opinion that monks counter warriors pretty hard, since all of warrior's combat skills are practically useless against monks except for hobble, and Mokoto demonstrated that this can be fairly easily mitigated. Kaio dunked on Declan in the last big tournament, a very capable warrior. And now Kizra dunked on Tordrak, also a very capable warrior.
Warriors have a general weakness of attrition battles which is amplified by the ford. It doesn't say much about monks. If you, as a warrior, run around "tick-catching" you are playing right into a healers strengths. Warriors trouble here comes from the diminishing returns we added to the simple spamming of bash. If we want to see warriors dunking monks, it should be as simple as easing off on that and letting gear do the rest.
Monks heal has always been controversial, with being able to regen while running. It will never be in a place that satisfies everybody. I suppose that goes for most things in life.
- The matchup is considered even, if the warrior is able to land hits (by landing more murders) and come out on top (with more hp) in the early skirmishes. This forces the monk to run about to heal (which is part of their god-given mechanics) and forces the warrior to do well on his tracking to keep the pressure on. If the warrior can track well enough, then he has the chance to win in this case. If he can't, then the monk will ultimately win in a drawn out fight because of healing.
- The matchup favors the monk, if the warrior CANNOT land hits despite landing more murders than the monk. In the above log, I wasn't able to hit Kizra while his bow was dismembering me through sanc, so there was no way that I could win if you factor in the monk's healing. In such a matchup, I was simply going for a last ditch effort running about to catch ticks + berserk, so as to bring my health back to fighting level again. It's not conventional but it's the only way for a warrior to heal, and trust me, it's not easy with Kizra on your tail.
In both scenarios:
- The monk can always attempt to go for a dirt kick, and if successfully, the monk then has a free ticket to pull off at least one heal (only 7 seconds to channel a heal). It does not matter if both sides get dirted because monks can still heal when dirted. On top of that, if a warrior gets dirted and chooses to stays on in combat or attempts a counter-dirt, the risk of getting disarmed and losing his weapon is high, whereas for the monk, it does not hurt to go for a counter dirt. This scenario forces the warrior in most cases to be on the retreat if he gets dirted.
- Monks can also nerve the warrior for -3 strength. If the warrior is not prepared for the strength deficiency, he can just as easily lose the fight even with athleticism.
- Contrary to popular beliefs, hobble does nothing to monks. In theory, it is supposed to mitigate dodging but I still see monks dodging pretty well after being hobbled. It may probably help in weakening the monk's legs when running around, but that can easily be mitigated by a fly scroll IF the monk chooses to run. Hobble wears off about 3 to 4 rounds in, not enough to gain a true advantage as it stands. Also a monk in leopard does not need dodge - 1st hand, 2nd hand parry and riposte (superb!) is good enough, because being hobbled does not reduce the effectiveness of those defenses.
- Monks can easily go on the offensive by landing murders. Three guaranteed attacks in a murder round (confirmed hit if in crane due to the absurd hitroll), in addition to preventing the warrior from landing murders because the monk landed the murder instead of the warrior, will easily sway the favor for the monk.
*That said, please do not start nerfing monks now. I want to enjoy cheesing with the class while it lasts.
Don't neglect that hobble lowers dexterity by a similar amount as nerve does to strength. It does plenty, including make bash land easier. Also, high enough strength (like fire giant) has a decent chance of landing hobble without the weapon advantage. That latter fact is very relevant vs monks. I know the game has changed a whole bunch and leaves me a little dizzy myself, but I'm sure there's still enough setbacks in flying that monks wouldn't want to do it. Dirts suck, trips suck, taking extra damage from charging used to be big deals.
No one charges. Ever. It lags a bit longer than murder (I think?) And it only hits once and normally for about the same damage as a single attack. Murder for 2nd 3rd etc. Is better.
Also monks literally already fly. They fly most of the time they're in crane style. So obviously the downsides of flying must not be very bad since crane is so dope.
From my experience both as warrior and monk, hobble doesn't really do shit.
Regarding charge, I have found it is actually a lot stronger than a single attack... The important thing to remember is that your opponent is also lagged (and from what I recall, rather significantly) when they get charged while flying. This might be enough to finish them off if you get another round or two of combat before they can respond. I have also seen a charge do ===OBLITERATES=== to an opponent without aura.
Bow/javelins/charge being a forgotten part of warrior arsenal doesnt make them bad skills. It just means underutilized. It probably also means the class is stacked to the point they dont even use awesome shit. Also I pointed out drunken style was underutilized and its right there in that log. I'll point out two more things. One is I reverted the drunken style buff by accident several weeks ago, so what you are looking at in this log is the original drunken style. It will be buffer than this soon. Second, and more importantly, is there are players that would seem to be rolling up storage characters for the gear that a warrior would need at level 50. So theres no point to lecture me that warriors are no good. If the best gear is simply hoarded then yeah warriors suck. If I keep hearing warriors blow the easiest buff is to load them up and slay them. Makes no sense to complain about a poorly geared warrior not being competitive. I mean look at it. Bone bracelet? Black velvet cloak. These are solid level 30 items
I was having 33 hit 54 dam there, which is already pretty much up there for a dwarf warrior with 21 strength at level 50, and I am already easily doing mangles. Don't see anything wrong with using velvet cloaks when the best in slot is actually a 3-point hit or dam equipment that requires me to go into winter, just for an additional point. Same with the bone bracelet. In fact, velvet cloaks and bone bracelets provide pretty good saves too with no penalties. Same thing for the studded ring, a good 2-point easy-to-obtain rare with no penalty, as compared to a 3-point best in slot.
Anyway, I think I have mostly outlined all the key points on this warrior vs monk topic in the above posts based on my limited experience. Not gonna bitch about this anymore.

So i just read this log finally and Tordak lost the fight because he didn't switch to a shield and hobble, he only had one good weapon, dual wielding a fiery dagger was funny. And lastly Kizra used sanc and not tenacity. I would have loved to see kizra fight Saxa to really prove how futile monks are against a decked out warrior.

Not only does the fish give full heal spell with no cd, when you look it up on the codex it's actually a pill, not a fish. Can hoard those for days without them decaying. Tordrak 0 , 0 , 0 . [reply to Kedaleam]That said though, I don't quite agree with monks retaining the benefits of the monk styles while wielding any form of weapons. You were in leopard wielding a bow and you were essentially riposting at least 75% of my dual-wielded attacks while raining down arrows upon me. This felt like a fringe case in which monks are able to circumvent the weakness of using bows (bow is a high damage weapon type that bypasses all dodge and parry attempts against an opponent in dual wield, with the drawback being unable to defend well). Even rangers, who possess the point blank skill, are not able to defend that well while using bows, so I don't see why monks who are supposed to be masters of hand-to-hand combat, be able to defend that well while wielding a weapon and dishing out high damage.
I had also fought before a monk in crane who was wielding a bow, and he was crane-wing technique blocking all my arrow shots, while piercing me with his arrows.
Davairus 0 , 0 , 0 . Just when you thought leopard style couldnt get better. Kizra 0 , 0 , 0 . I think you could have countered the bow pretty easily by either using sideswipe or a 2-handed weapon. You were dual-wielding nearly constantly for the beginning of the fight, and defensive for most of the end. Dwarf is a tough matchup for monk, since most styles do magic damage (Dav, this is why tiger/dragon would have been a bad idea compared to drunken). You needed to take advantage of the fact that a monk can't switch styles more than a few times before running away to meditate.

[reply to Tordrak]The interesting utility that bow gives monks is the ability to switch from defensive to two-handed instantly, and I expected it to only work as a surprise followed by dirt/lag. I think a rematch could look quite different now that you know what to expect. I also didn't really think bow would work as well as it did...decided to try it out for giggles after Ozaru blew Bladefurry off after he suggested that on Mokoto's graveyard.
As such, I think it is dumb this is allowed.
- A warrior in dual wield already has a hard time penetrating the defenses of leopard because of that super-effective riposte ability despite in a superior combat style.
- The fight between a dual wielding warrior against a bow-wielding ranger normally ends up with both sides hurting each other plenty, because bows are meant to have weak defenses.
Does it really make sense that you allow a monk to have both the best defenses (leopard style) and one of the best damage (bow) at the same time?
Like I said, this is a fringe case for monks because of the way monk styles work. As long as you have the style active in your affects, wielding a weapon does not remove the style benefits. Normally, this is not a common problem because most monk players do not cheese this, but do you really want to allow this?
-45 min duels is from dueling in the ford. Its really telling when a warrior can run off and tick regen from awful condition back up to quite a few wounds. Isnt this kinda masochistic to pick?
-I wondered why not just drop into tiger/dragon style and try to finish it since the fight is clearly won and just needs nuke. But not my duel. It just seemed a factor making it take a long time. I think I woulda done it

Davairus 0 , 0 , 0 . Warriors have a general weakness of attrition battles which is amplified by the ford. It doesn't say much about monks. If you, as a warrior, run around "tick-catching" you are playing right into a healers strengths. Warriors trouble here comes from the diminishing returns we added to the simple spamming of bash. If we want to see warriors dunking monks, it should be as simple as easing off on that and letting gear do the rest. Xenyar

This forces the monk to run about to heal (which is part of their god-given mechanics) and forces the warrior to do well on his tracking to keep the pressure on. If the warrior can track well enough, then he has the chance to win in this case. If he can't, then the monk will ultimately win in a drawn out fight because of healing.
