Before
Thondolin woke at the same time as he did every morning, shortly after seven and with the fresh breeze blowing. He stretched, threw water on his face, had a bite to eat, and was out the door as he normally was each day. He took the same route to work as usual, past the daycare (giving the children a wave as he passed). Past the fat drunk lady in the city square, and as always wondering when was she ever going to get her life together. As usual the soldiers were out patrolling the encampment even though it had been many years since the sliths had reared their ugly faces in the area. All of a sudden a violent explosion rocked his eardrums and a wave of pressure washed over him from somewhere north of the encampment. It had come from Valour! Something was wrong, he could see the soldiers facial expressions that even they too knew something unnatural had happened. As he ran north the soldiers ran past and he heard their raised voices, and upon the wind heard rumors of demons running through the streets of the great city. If there were demons running through the streets of Valour then every man and able bodied woman would need to contribute their strength to protect not only western Serin but the entire world itself. Thondolin ran north, ready to protect Valour, Serin, and all that was good in this world.

Description:

From the ground up, this dwarf is as tall and as wide as you'd expect him to be. His legs, like tree trunks, form a firm foundation upon which his muscular and boxy frame erupts. He is barrel-chested and with heavily muscled arms. His neck is as thick as your own waist. A shock of fiery red hair flares out in all directions from his head as if his visage was a ball of fire. His beard looks particularly incendiary and practically crackles with volatility.

  1. I feel like I'm in a never-ending cycle of:

    - Get a really great idea for a cabal character
    - From level 0-40 have a blast ranking, pking, and all around fun
    - Grind 40-50 in the cabal gauntlet
    - Once I hit 50 I lose interest because I can't pk with the big boys and girls at 50 so I basically stop logging in. But feel guilty for not logging in because I have nice gear and don't want to be a pussy. I know I *should* have fun when I log in, I mean, I had a blast from 0-40 right so why aren't I having fun at 50? Because I'm afraid of dying and being left naked over and over like usual.
    - Eventually get frustrated enough with myself for not logging in that I log in and delete. Feel an IMMEDIATE rush of relief that my 50 is gone so I don't have to hate myself anymore for not logging him in.
    - Roll up a new guy and have a blast until 40
    - Repeat

    Thoughts? Suggestions?

Maybe try Strife or uncaballed? Something where you're not compelled to eat a death defending cabal grounds. If things go sideways you can just GTFO and try again. Also, if you're up for it, you can grind in grimforge for a while at 40 and build up a good war chest to quickly replace things you lose in pk via gambling/forging. Posting logs can help get tips from other players, provided you can avoid getting flamed for some perceived slight in the log.
    2. Pick a RP goal as well and weave a story around yourself in addition to PK. Engage with the Consortium. We will help you with your story and help re equip you when you lose gear which should make getting wiped less scary. Heck, I've had a bulletin board post out trying to give away cloaks of mist for like a month or two and only ever gotten 2 applicants (and one just returned it because he wasn't going to make hours).

Uh... pick goals you can accomplish , and commit. if pk'ing is scary it means you dont have the heart for it, and if it seems too big a goal to get "good", well, youre wrong. accept you have to be willing get pk'ed to get better, and growth characters will have a horrible record. its simple really isnt it. i do think the pk stats as they are encourage a kind of conservative playstyle

Three really solid points made here:

      Go uncaballed
Get some good RP (usually not hinged on being a successful PKer… made that mistake before)
Accept that you have to be willing to get PK’d to get better.

I’ll add a few tips that helped me. Do a little bit of mental recalibration here: I don’t know of another game that makes PK as exciting as AR. Huge adrenaline spikes and hugely rewarding when you do something right. That’s a huge draw for me. And think about the worst that happens if something goes wrong: you run. Worst case scenario, you lose eq and have to spend a few hours re-equipping. It’ll probably go faster because people tend to help out. All of this is easier if you roll uncaballed because then you only fight on your own terms.

Also, if you’re afraid of PK, I highly recommend rolling a cleric. These are super forgiving classes that are hard to kill because of high healing, defense, and utility. These classes also lend themselves really well to solid RP. Plus they can play great support for some of the top PKers so you can learn some tricks (thinking of Eurayel’s Duergar Druid friend, Lumabella, etc.)

        Agree with everything above.

Pick a class you're interesting in playing and review logs of prominent chars of said class. Reviewing logs has been incredibly helpful for me. And often times the comment threads go into more detail on strategy...countless nuggets of wisdom in there. Take all that and just practice. You will get PKed but you will learn something each time. Also recommend challenging people in the arena to the stun for death-free PK experiences. The cost to buy an arena fight is trivial.

My advice is to play an invoker. Don't worry about gear since Rare and Unique HP gear is very easy to obtain yourself, for the most part. If you want to spice it up, Neutral Lawful and aim for Justice. You will have a blast.

          1. I also support the other goals, I’ve gotten demolished over my lifetime, which I’d disheartening at times but I’ve also had incredible rushes when I’ve squeaked out my very very rare wins. What I’ve not been able to accomplish as a pvper, I’m super proud of my rp interactions with everyone, and my title tickles me to no end! It’s made the fact that I can’t hang with…well anybody really in combat more bearable. Find something you like doing an explore it, be it crafting, exploring, or digging into unpopular skills, lair building, or some sort of schtick that you find entertaining! See you in the flip side Thindolin, best wishes on your next toon!
